La Canfora: Hurney Deserves Some Credit For Building Panthers

Hurney did have a role in building this team but he played a bigger role in unbuilding it.  The amount of players he drafted his past few drafts that are no longer with the team and are busts is mind numbing.  If not for the ridiculous salaries and draft picks, Carolina could have been in this position 2 years ago.  And with NO out of comission last year, Carolina could be defending their Super Bowl Championship this year

Ok Hurney did  a good job with the Newton and Kuechly picks, but, Hurney never ever did what DG has done with such cap problems.  He has filled the roster with castoffs, undrafted rookies etc to fill those positions of need, and they are producing.  We wouldn't be 8 and 3 without the moves by DG.  With Hurney,  we wouldn't be in playoff contention and Ron Rivera would be on his way out at the conclusion of the season.

I'd argue if #NewRon  showed up in 2012....we would have been a 9-10 win team a in playoff contention.

I think Riverboat is the biggest reason we are winning ultimately

Lol. Any GM with the number one pick that year would have taken Cam. The fact that Hurney did it now nets him a franchise builder moniker? Give me a break.

No one thought Cam was the best player in that draft.   We got blasted left and right for drafting him.

I definitely credit Hurney for all the players he acquired that are on roster and contributing.

I also credit him with the players that didn't make it and the cap mess he left.

Bottom Line: While I appreciate the good players he left, I have no confidence that he was capable of building the roster we have now.

People speak about Hurney, but I feel with him gone, they have forgotten much of his horrid drafting, and his contracts.

Yes he deserves credit for his first rounders, we wouldn't have Cam and Luke without him. However, he seemingly went out of his way to ignore drafting a successor to Steve (who he didn't even draft either), hell he couldn't even get a worthy #2 WR while he was here.

You can dig through his laundry list of mistakes, and it won't take long to feel sick to your stomach.

Bottom line, he did leave pieces in place for Gettleman, and I do not hate Hurney in any way. I appreciate him for some of the players he has left us with. Unfortunately though, for every good move he would make, he would inevitably end up shooting himself in the foot.

his cap management was really the only negative....and I think part of that was simply doing what Richardson wanted.

he was a good drafter.  You can point to bad picks for every GM.

Hurney doesn't deserve poo.... I'm sorry but for every good pick he made there was a bad one to follow it, along with a head-scratching signing. Jake is retired and still getting paid because of Hurney... I'm sorry I am just not a fan of the guy.

Good drafter??? He's been gone for 1 year now, let's look at our starters:

Cam: Hurney draft pick, argueably obvious pick

Deangelo/Stewart: Hurney draft picks and currently occupying a large amount of our cap

Tolbert: Hurney FA aquisition, this was a huge one, I'll give him credit

Smith: Not a Hurney draft pick

Lafell: Hurney draft pick, took a while to become good

Ginn: Not a Hurney acquisition

Gross: Not a Hurney draft pick

Wharton: Hurney released, brought back by Gman

Kalil: Solid 2nd rounder for Hurney

Nate Chandler: Gman acquistion

Bell: Barely servicable Hurney pick

Olsen: Great Hurney trade

Defense:

Hardy: Great Hurney late round pick

Star: Not a Hurney pick

Dwan: Combination Hurney/Gman, Gman got him to stay

Johnson: Great Hurney Late rounder

Davis: Great Hurney Pick

Kueh: Semi obvious Hurney pick, he loves LB/RB first round

Klein: great Gman Late rounder

Munnerlyn: Solid 7th round Hurney Pick

White: Great FA Gman pickup

Lester: Great Gman FA pickup

Mitchell: Great Gman FA pickup.

So after not even one calendar year of Hurney being gone, that leaves us with:

Hurney 14 starters, Gman: 9 starters

Half the team is Gman's, and it's been 1 calendar year, yes Hurney had some picks in the draft, but the fact we have several years worth of drafts with 1 or 0 players still on the team or in the NFL is terrible.

    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
