La Canfora: Hurney Deserves Some Credit For Building Panthers

Ok Hurney did  a good job with the Newton and Kuechly picks, but, Hurney never ever did what DG has done with such cap problems.  He has filled the roster with castoffs, undrafted rookies etc to fill those positions of need, and they are producing.  We wouldn't be 8 and 3 without the moves by DG.  With Hurney,  we wouldn't be in playoff contention and Ron Rivera would be on his way out at the conclusion of the season.

Hurney did some good things and some bad things.  You can't give him all the blame or the credit.  He overpaid players for how good they were in the locker room and the community as opposed to how good they were on the field.  He drafted guys almost for the type of person they were as the type of player they were.  Thats why you never hear bad things like happened to the Dolphins come out of the Panther's locker room.

But he never drafted guys that were more talented and had some off the field problems (that probally came as much from him as from JR).  And Fox kind of hurt him by not giving alot of playing time to rookies and letting them develop before cutting them their 3rd or 4th year.  Instead choosing to pay middle of the road free agents that he could trust instead.  When was the last time before this year you heard of this team having 5 rookies on the field at the same time?

You can't win in the NFL with a bunch of boy scouts but you can't win with a bunch of thugs either.  There has to be some middle ground.

Good players we over paid for and bad players we kept to long are somewhat his fault.  So is the core of this team his making to.  Depends on how you look at it thats all I am saying.

Oh and that 2011 draft, Cam is the only player from that draft still on this team.

I give Hurney credit for creating a financial situation that would force the key players from him to NOT be here long! oh and for Fua, and Edwards, McClain, and Pickles, and Jarrett, oh and other McClain, and Otah, and Brown, and Martin, Pilares, and Hogan, and Goodson, and......... I'm done. Sure he had brought in some talent but he certainly has brought in several busts, leaky trash, but he didn't place the personnel where they currently are. I give credit to Ron being on the hot seat. That brought these changes, not to mention the injuries that seemed to reveal our true secondary. Just a thought.

True. But I think we have Cam ultimately bc Rivera did his homework and wanted him. Don't see Hurney pulling the trigger without Ron wanting him and making the case

Rivera had absolutely nothing to do with the hiring of chud or drafting of cam. This is well documented.

So many contributors right now have been Gettleman acquisitions

Mitchell, Mikell, Lester, White, Star, Klein, Ginn, and Short to name a few

As many departed GMs often do, Hurney left us with a solid base. But Gettleman has filled all the gaps, and he did it with mostly stop gap type players. Give Pioli as much credit for what's going on in Kansas City. Much of that team is his building, it's just Dorsey and Reid are steering it in the right direction.

I agree with the thread consensus that he made some good contributions but also deserved to get the boot.  The 2009 and 2010 drafts were just downright bad.  He put the major pieces in place in his last 2 years but everything else warranted his dismissal.  He was just very mediocre and caved too much.

The best picks Hurney made are made the first couple years he was here. Cam and Luke were fairly obvious choices, and I think he got pretty lucky with Luke due to his ability to only want to draft LB or RB in the first round.

Cam and Luke were far from obvious choices.....

Newton was a raw and heavily questioned guy....

And we just made Beason the highest MLB in the NFL (95% of this board was against drafting Luke when his name was first brought up)

How many times MUST this be said?

CAM WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN PICKED NUMBER ONE OVERALL WITHOUT A CAP SALARY IN PLACE.

With the cap in place, Cam was the obvious decision...for the Panthers, with maybe one other arguable choice. Trading down would have been likley too, but not so much with the cap.

Basically nothing, no one, had more influence on this pick than the cap being put into place.

    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
