La Canfora: Hurney Deserves Some Credit For Building Panthers

Don't know if Marty would have signed Mike Mitchell and Ted Ginn. Doubt it. Also, I feel safe in saying that I do believe that Marty would have drafted Star - but my gut says the rest of the draft looks completely different.

Yeah Star was a gimme. Any GM with a huge hole at defensive tackle would have drafted Star. He would have avoided Kawaan Short in the second round because that would have been his admission of fault for the 2011 draft. Hurney would not have wanted to admit he was wrong about Fua. He already had pie in his face with McClain.

Hurny does deserve some credit.  First round picks were usually solid, look at Cam and Luke, but championship teams are built in the later rounds.  Do you think Hurney finds guys like Lester or some of these later picks that contribute?  I'm not sure.  Do you think he signs these cheap FA's to come in and play hard, guys like Ginn/Mitchell/Mikell/Florence/Blackburn?  I'm not sure.  DG does a lot with less, and I can't wait to see another draft under him.  I'm not sure Hurney picks Star and Short, which has proved to be a great choice.

Yeah those were good.  But those are two people.  The rest of the later rounds are pretty meh.  Like I said, he should get credit for sure, but I think that is winning us games are the small pieces DG brought in, DG's good draft with those DTs, and getting Dwan back without giving in to paying too much.

He also drafted Big Money in the third round. Our biggest impact players outside of 89 & Star are all from Hurney. He deserves a ton of credit for the personnel on this team.

He was.  I don't even question the Otah choice, because Otah WAS a monster he just got hurt and couldn't play through things.

agree! I loved the pick when it was chosen and it looked even better until he got hurt. Otah was a hell of a tackle. He would have been right there on the same level with the other tackles drafted with him: Albert and Clady.

You have to find more than 1-2 starters in a draft, and that was usually about what he did.  Johnson was a good pick definitely, but for every starter we found we drafted 5 more that were duds.  Although we let a good amount of people go that ended up being good for other teams.
