Steve Smith Career Watch

When Carter hung his cleats up.....only Rice had better career numbers

And Cris Carter never played a season Jerry Rice wasn't suited up....so Rice happened to be in his prime then. Carter did lead the league in TDs several seasons

So I still don't see how problem children like Owens are first ballot guys....

Again, Carter has never been near the league leader in yards which says a lot about his ceiling. Just because Owens and moss were headcases doesn't lessen their impact and numbers.

All I'm saying is Cris Carter is Steve's measuring stick.

Both are 2 and 3 respectively in all time receiving yards only behind jerry rice. Cris carter is 9th on that list. They are first ballot

Edit: they almost best him statictisally in every category except for receptions and only moss is under him. TO while having problems is one of the best receivers of all time

Carter was much higher when he retired....he was essentially where they are at the 2-3 spot. Carter also didn't play any of his career in the passing era.

I wouldn't think Carter getting in is the measuring stick. He played in a different era. Better career numbers across the board.

Smiths biggest problem in terms of making the hall will be touchdowns. He will be lucky if he breaks 75 receiving TDs for his career and that is going to hurt him a lot. Yards are great but touchdowns is the bigger stat and that is where he falls short. It sucks because Smith is the best wide out I have ever watched play and he deserves to make it but I just don't see it happening.

I think the touchdowns only hurt Smith in the eyes of those who are ignorant of his play. He is 5'9 and was never truly a redzone threat. But even at his size we saw pull down many jump balls and fade routes in his prime. But that's not what made Smith special. He's the best YAC WR of all time and one of the best WR's between the 20's to play the game.

His all purpose yards should give him a boost in HOF consideration too. I just wished we played the guy his rookie year. I also wish he could have had 1 more catch the year he broke his arm. He was just shy of  a 1,000yds. He should really have close to 9 or 10 1,000 seasons. He was robbed of that.

on the flip side there was a year when he got 1000 yards and broke his arm on the play, so he got kinda lucky there

    • I am guessing that Cam Ward goes 1 or 2 and Carter goes 2 or 1. It is possible that Hunter goes third.  That would throw Sanders into the Aaron Rodgers free fall alert status. It seems that the Giants have no choice but to take Sanders--but if they like another QB better--like Dart or Will Howard (I am still predicting that Howard continues to creep up boards) they could trade back and still get Dart or Howard or Ewers. NY fans would probably want  GM Joe Schoen's head, but I sense bust in Sanders.   Personally, I would not take Sanders if I needed a QB.  He projects a vibe that he is entitled--better than he is, and his father would be loud and critical if things went any way but the Sanders way, and he is, according to a few articles I read, pursuing a career in music.  Lotta potential noise there.  As a "common" player in college, I would resent the fact that some players are making millions.  Sanders had a towel with a gold buffa---oops---dollar sign embroidered on it.  Almost reminds me of Brian Bosworth coming out of Oklahoma some 40 years ago--lotta hype, lotta self promotion--bust.  Again, just the vibe I am getting.  I think only a desperate team like one of  the NY franchises will take him early.  Cleveland?  Carter or Hunter, depending on what happens with Garrett there. Someone is going to trade up to get an OT. I see the Titans trading out of the #1 pick if they can get a taker--the Giants come to mind. Not sure what this rambling bit of stream of consciousness proved, but I am going to hit "submit reply" now.
    • If we're drafting a RB at #8 overall after both paying Chuba and trading up to draft a RB in the 2nd last year then the entire front office needs to get fired on the spot.
    • I'm glad a lot of us already understood this. The pundits are saying that this draft doesn't have a lot of elite players, but is good on depth. Why would anyone trade away a 2nd or 3rd round player to move up and grab a guy who isn't' significantly better than a player who would be available if the team stayed put. I understand moving up if all of a sudden there is a run on a position and team has that pegged as a major need. That's not happening this year with picks 1-7. We need to stay put unless some idiot GM does offer us a 2nd rounder to move down no more than 4-5 spots.
