Double Dip Drafting

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Don't forget we have some young raw talented prospects on our team who have seen little to no playing time this year. If even half of them develop into something, then we may not have as many holes as we think we do next year. Guys like Brandon Williams, Kugbila, Tavarres King/McNutt, even Nate Chandler (he's still very raw). Hey maybe Norman can still be salvaged too...I still have some hope for him. I don't think it's crazy to think Brandon Williams could turn into our Julius Thomas or Jordan Cameron...very similar measurables and both of them sat for a season or two before turning into superstars.

There is this myth about players you drafting and being a "reach" or "good value". You either pick good players or bad players. We need to pick good players. If an offensive tackle is graded in the 2nd round by Kiper who gives a fug, pick him 22nd overall if he will help us. It is highly unlikely we will be in position to draft a "franchise" tackle for the rest of Cam's time in CLT. For this reason we are going to have to "reach" for one that isn't considered a sure thing.

you really dont have to have a oline full of 1st round picks to have a great oline.

look what we did to the 49ers

True but at the same time i dont think there has been a more talented, dynamic, DEEP, defensive line in the NFL than this one in a while. We kind of all saw it coming in the off season anyway.

I am going to go a TAD off topic here.   Did anyone see the OGs from Baylor.  They were talking about how they were a finesse team but they showed some videos of their brutality.

They supposedly have a OG that is a beast and the video I saw.  He was.  Mauled a DT from Oklahoma.  Mauled and pancaked.   Took three defenders out with another block.

First I have heard of him but I would jump at him and another OT.

It depends on who falls to us (just like Star did). G-man and his team did the homework and Star was a great pick. I think Short was already on our radar, so we took them both.  This year it could be a WR if  a player drops. Our player of most need would be O-line.  If we could find another Ginn who has something to prove it would allow us to go a double O-line draft.  I still think Nicks is on the G-man's want list so lets see how it plays out. We are now relevent.

From a strictly numbers perspective OL makes the most sense since we play a minimum of 5 of them on every down.  We will never have 5 receivers and would probably never have 5 CB's on the field at any given time.  That means it would be far easier to draft 2 OL guys that would be able to contribute next season than it would either of the other two primary positions of need.  I suppose it's possible if we drafted 2 WR's or CB's they would both be contributors to some degree but neither of them (probably) would be on the field every play as would probably be the case if we drafted OL with the first two picks.

So from a need plus a likelihood to contribute perspective OL makes the most sense for double dipping if the best player available when each pick is made happens to be a O lineman.

If we're talking specific positions, I'd say it's easily WR.  Not worth it for OG however, we should definitely target a OT high to start at RT and transition to LT once Gross retires.

It's been nice to see Ginn do well and Smitty still be Smitty with LaFell coming through in the clutch on occasion but we gotta get more weapons.

...but I don't want to think about the draft right now because I think we can beat any team in the league with the squad we have right now.

There is absolutely no legitimate reason to expect Gross to come back for vet min.

First of all, he is playing very, very well compared to other LT's in the league. Second, he has meant and still means a lot to the other players and the organization. I think he will gladly give us a nice home town discount, but offering him vet min would be an absolute insult.

As to Stew getting the axe over DWill, age and other factors aside, Stew's contract is much harder to get out from under than DWill's. We still owe Stew a lot of guaranteed money. We're already going to be eating Beason's dead money next year. Cutting or trading Stew would really put us in a hole.

Yes, my mistake. That's what I intended to mean: home town discount. Even though Gross is playing well this season, he's clearly aging and have talked about retirement. If we're lucky he'll come back for one last year. He have been wel compensated from this franchise and its time for him to give the respect back to this town and its fans.

I might be wrong and I'm not a money man but I thought many on here said that Dwill's contract was much harder to rid of.

Richardson is a beast. Probably the best OG this season but Yankey from Stanford is making a climb above him. Gabe Jackson is another stud. Those three will probably go in the 1st.

Def O-line.... yes we need receivers, but Cam has shown that with time he can get the ball where it needs to go. An upgrade at the o-line would not only make it easier on Cam but it would also improve our running game. Dave will address our short-comings, in what order we don't know.
