Double Dip Drafting

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

If you went back and read the boards from this past April, you'd find a lot of people who were apoplectic after our second round pick was announced.

Fans were in utter disbelief when GM Dave Gettleman "double dipped" by taking another defensive tackle (Kawann Short) in the second round after drafting DT Star Lotulelei in the first.

Fast foward to today though, and people generally aren't so that said about that. Especially not after seeing Kawann make a critical play on Monday night by forcing a fumble from Patriots running back Stevan Ridley.

So let's suppose Gettleman were to apply that strategy again in this year's draft.

What position would you want to see "double dipped" this time?

Offensive line

Wide Receiver

Cornerback

Offensive Line-

You see how much impact the DT's are having. It would be wise to do the same for the O-line that dominates the trenches = more time for QB to throw and more running lanes for the RB -   This group has direct impact on the production of the Skilled Players. We should be dominant on both side of the ball for many years!

hawg molliez...RT and RG

but do it in the second and third rounds after you picked up the best available WR in the first and best pass catching TE or another WR in the fourth.

This is what I was thinking/wanting.

We should be in the 26-32 range for picking in the 1st and that is a nice luxury spot for getting a solid WR.

(Hopkins went 27th last year for example)

I disagree.......... I would like the cream of the crop especially for the Lineman ...........you see the difference in talent between Star vs.......4th round DT

This upcoming draft is loaded with O-line and we should draft  1st & 2nd........We should be building the OL like the DL Elite and top 5  not top 10 or 20 that is average around the league.

But i wouldn't mind going 1st - OL  2nd- TE/WR

We have to start thinking like good teams do, and good teams usually don't have high picks to grab all-star oline.  Good teams however, DO grab quality WRs in late first and 2nd rounds.   This is where having a good GM comes into play, finding good o-line in later rounds.  Only bad teams have the luxury of grabbing top LT's in the top 10.  Glad to say, that won't be us this year.  Everyone may be surprised that a lot of great teams have 3rd/4th round guys starting even at the LT spot guarding the blind side.  The only WR that REALLY can get separation on our team is Ginn, and he's still not a #1 WR.  We need that #1 that demands double teams that can take it downfield.  I agree that this has as much to do with Cam having to scramble as the O-line, most of the time Cam has time to throw to be honest.

It all depends on if you mean double dipping in the first two rounds like last year.

I don't have any problem with double dipping if the first 4 rounds.  First two may be a different story.

I was reading drafttek this morning and they have picking at 23.  They say there isn't value in any OL at that position,

and having us take WR Matthews out of Vandy, passing over ot Richardson out of Tenn, G Yankey out of Stanford,

and TE Ebron out of Carolina, all of whom they think will be taken in the next 6 picks.

I'd be ok with that, as long as we address the OL in the 2nd.

eta:  especially since Clowney could very likely end up with the Bucs or Falcons

Well, obviously most would say OL at first, and that certainly wouldn't be a bad call based on the circumstances.

But then you have to remember, all of our WR's except Steve Smith are FA's next year, and he's going to be 35 himself.

It's still very early, but if there is a top receiver still on the board when we pick, we would be foolish to pass on him.

Yes, Ebron would be a solid pick and I wouldn't mind him there.  But some people think he'll go even higher.  I hope Ginn gives a discount since we rejuvenated his career when no one else probably would, but who knows.

I wouldn't mind WR in the first even if we sign Hicks to a reasonable contract (no Mike Wallace money please).

People keep saying this but I go to the games and key in on this and I have never seen it as an issue.

Lafell and Ginn both get open just fine.

they really dont get it fast enough. if they did get open just fine we wouldnt be in the bottom 3rd of the league when it comes to passing offense
