Tom Brady and the no-huddle

It's almost guaranteed that the Pats come out of the gate with the no huddle. It puts teams on their heels and takes them out of their comfort zone. The way brady executes it, defenses can get gassed quickly.

Quck outs to the receivers, dumps over the middle, draws / delays to Ridley, an occasional shot down the field, all without allowing for substitutions by the d unless a timeout is called.

It's a thing of beauty to see....when it works. If they don't have success with it, they do what you said, but count on them doing it ealry, once Brady gets the personnel he wants on the D.

No way they do it unless they're trying to put us away after we make some early mistakes. They score fast, they keep our defense fresh the whole game and our offense has more time to work with. They'll run their offense a little faster than the 9ers did, but only in the sense that the huddle will be short and they'll hurry to the line. Their objective HAS to be "run the ball, make safe passes, get first downs, chew up clock" if they want to win this game.

Speculation in Boston is the Pats will run 4-5 wide. Conceed the power run game (because we're such a good run stuffing team), and dink and dunk our defense to death.

If Brady stays upright, it could work. Don't forget this is the first game of the season the Pats will have all of their offensive weapons. Gronk, replacement Welker, and Vereen being healthy makes a difference.

I have seen a couple people say this.  I think we will be fine, because there has been a couple games where we have played nickel more than our base.

Another thing we do is we run a lot of our defense out of a 3-4 look and overload on one side.  At least twice against San Fran we dropped Krakken or Johnson out into coverage to take away the quick slant and blitzed from the other side with a safety, CB, or LB.

I don't think it will be as easy as just spreading us out and trying to dink and dunk.  Then again we haven't played anyone as smart or as good as Brady yet.

I still feel they have to run the ball effectively in order to be successful.

I'm willing to bet that you will see a lot of nickel tonight, and Thomas Davis and Luke can cover pretty well.  Gronk as always will be an X-factor and will likely get his and we will focus on trying to keep everyone else bottled up.

Our front 4 has been good enough to stop the run and get pass rush.  As long as we don't have to commit extra guys we should be able to defend this offense pretty well.

Also Brady does not have a completion over 30 yards (air yards) all season I don't think.  So our safeties may be able to play a little shallower.

I think new England will move the ball some, the game will hinge on whether they get FGs or TDs when they do.

I think that if the D starts in nickle or dime, Brady will go no huddle and up the tempo a bit. That will be the only time the rush may be effective. Go 3 wide, spread the D out, then a delayed handoff to Ridley or payaction.

Brady has been amazing at playaction this year. He'll have to be more accurate than he's been at times this year if the Pats are to have a chance. He'll be threading the needle to get it by the guys in coverage, because not many of the wr's are getting much in the way of seperation.

i'm not too concerned.

i mean it will be stressful at first (probably the first couple series), but i think the defense keeps up with it.

i won't judge the D handling an up tempo defense by how they did against the eagles or even the bills because i think that they are quite a bit better, more fluid, comfortable with their roles, and more confident than they were for each of those.

i think that we will see the same thing we've seen the past few weeks only at a quicker pace. the D will get them off the field, forcing three and outs...only they'll do it quicker. i think we'll have an extra possession or two because of how quickly they will get off the field. i also think that we'll burn more time on offense than usual and that, imo, only works to our advantage.

the pats will try to set a fast pace for the game, but the game will only go as fast as we allow it. we won't match their pace, we'll counter it by keeping the ball for longer.

i said in another thread that i can see us having the ball for 40 minutes this game and still having the same outcome as the past few. it may not be a blowout, but i think that things will go in our favor...at least as long as the refs don't throw flags for non-existant penalties like what happened in new orleans yesterday when the refs decided that they were going to help the saints out.

From all reports the Patriots normally come out and play slow in the 3rd quarter, which would naturally be a plus for us.

Thats true, and I don't get it at all. That used to be a strength of the team. they've been terrible in the 3rd qtr this season. They can'afford to do that tonight.

that sounds little Madden-ish but you never know with Belichick.

OL play hasn't been great in NE this year and that puts a lot of pressure on them to hold up if the first read isn't there IMO.  Brady is still as immobile as ever.  Plus, they may be getting healthy but outside of Gronk....Brady doesn't yet have that much time (chemistry) with all these guys yet IMO.

I don't think the Pats will set a fast pace. They understand how the panthers will have sustained drives and won't want to exhaust their defense.

Their no huddle can still take a lot of time off the clock. They just get to the LOS and Brady has up to 25 seconds to review the D, make his calls (even with intense noise) by going up & down the line.

I think if they tried from the git-go to go into a hurry-up, the'd be screwed, at least if they did it for any length of time. Do it in the 4th, when the D mught be tired; then it can work.

the no huddle is how you wear out a great DL.....limit them later in the game if done correctly.  That is why Peyton did it on the very first drive against KC.

I don't think Belichick's brain works like that.  He isn't going to gameplan based around the thought his O will go 3 and out often.  I'm sure he thinks he can drive down the field on us with his gameplan.

Maybe it will be different this time, but we have been playing nickel a lot all season a couple of games we played more nickel than base and our front has still been able to stop the run. Star was at one point graded #1 in the NFL in run defense amongst all NFL DTs according to PFF. I am not sure if he is still there or not but he is likely still at or near the top.

Our DEs do a great job setting the edge and forcing play to the middle and Luke and Thomas are two of the best at shooting the gaps and tackling.

The Pats offense is s very versatile, but so is our defense so far. We have seen a little bit of everything.

It is going to be fun to watch. I still feel New England will move the ball between the 20s, the key will be if we can limit them to FGs instead of TDs. Also takeaways will be key as always.

I agree to a point. BB will do whatever benefits his team the most, what gives them the greater advantage.

In this case, it's to prevent the D from teeing off on Brady and the OL. I can't see them coming out in a standard formation / running the ball up the middle only to hit the DL wall. that would be planning for a 3 and out.

I think there's only a small chance they don't go to the no huddle on the first drive, unless they have really poor field position. If a punt is downed inside the 10yd ln, they'll hold off from it.
