Munnerlyn: Secondary gets no respect

Well, I look at it this way. prove yourselves and it'll come.

I am wondering why no one is talking about Wilkes. being this is his 2nd season, there is a few more pieces helping out the secondary.

Granted we all know the front 7 are helping the secondary immensely, but, don't you think Wilkes has helped (especially the young guys) out a bit?

He hasn't even been mentioned once that I recall.

Meh... either way... go out and play lights out. don't miss opportunities and the respect will come.

Sounds like most here did not read the entire article...which you should.  Below are a couple more quotes from Captain.

Munnerlyn said that's something he and fellow defensive backs have come to expect given Carolina's talented linemen and linebackers.

And he said they're OK with it.

''We don't mind, we'll drive the bus from the back,'' Munnerlyn said. ''That's what we've been saying from day one.''

Munnerlyn said the team's front seven is ''terrific'' and deserving of all of its accolades. He also said having a great pass rush is a defensive back's best friend.

They may not be the fastest of the biggest, but they do two things extremely well.

1) They play physical (thanks Mike Mitchell)

2) They trust and play the system

I can't emphasize how important number 2 is. When you're a gifted athlete like Ed Reed or Revis, you can afford to free lance and still make plays. Our guys don't have that same kind of ability, but they play smart and physical. They are where they're supposed to be, so they don't get burnt, and they're in position to make plays when the other team makes mistakes.

I think one thing that has helped our secondeary tremendously is the fact that we have been locked down on the opposing TEs this year (minus the Falcons game 1st half). Our linebackers have taken away the middle of the field consistently helping the DBs on the edges and deep. Ooops, did I just give props to the front 7 as well.

Uh....that's because before we had a dominant front seven, you nobodys played like garbage.

that's pretty bullshit.  how many of these starters were on those teams?  and Cap was never as bad as people on this board thought, he's always been decent.  he may not be one of the best CBs in the NFL but he's an above average corner.

Yeah Munnerlynn is overlooked at times and when you think about it really, he's the closest thing to a ballhawk we have on defense.

But I'm telling you, if Melvin White gets through this second half of the season and playoffs looking like he's done thus far, he may be one of the biggest sleepers we've found in a while.  Looking at the way he plays, I'm very surprised he went undrafted.  He matches great with larger receivers and doesn't have any glaring weaknesses in his game.  You could tell at times last year Thomas was in over his head but White just looks on point and sticks with his guys throughout the game's entirety.  As every cornerback can attest, he's had a guy slip by a few times but he looks damn good and someone I'd like to see here a while.

Between Mitchell at S (Lester maybe, verdict is still out), Munnerlynn and White, we've got some talent back there no doubt.  Add on good vet additions in Mikell and Florence and it's obvious we have an above average secondary (not great) regardless of the front seven.

The way I see it, we don't need a few some bodies. Mike Mitchell is rehabbing his reputation around the league and may blossom into a somebody here in Carolina.

Comparisons were drawn between the 03' Super Bowl defense and this years. While I have no stats, we were playing with nobodies in the back and a well respected front 7. We are right where we need to be.
