Panthers Sign Travis Bond, Guard from Minn Practice Squad

As a lifelong UNC fan who has watched (oftentimes suffered) through almost every game he has played while at UNC and actually met him at two Meet the Heels signings I can offer a little perspective.

For starters he's simply a massive human being. I know the pictures alone say that but seeing him in person he's huge. With that said he can definitely add a little more bulk while losing some fat and I think that will help him not play quite as stiff as he does from time to time. He definitely plays a little to tall and sometimes he plays slow but if he gets his big paws on some one it's over. Ask Gio Bernard about the holes he created for him. Travis is the definition of a project player. What I think he lacks most that is fixable over time is just poor technique. With the right coaching staff....that is patient enough....he can definitely be a true depth guy up to an above average starter at guard. Maybe down the line he can fill in at tackle but I personally don't see that. I think he'll always be a tad to slow to ever be an efficient tackle but I absolutely believe that if he commits himself to it and a coaching staff is willing to be patient he can someday be a valube piece to the Carolina Panthers. Just my 2 cents.

Hes a former Tarheel, so thats fine with me. Goes back to what I said last week, that there has to be someone that is a better prospect to play G than your previously fifth string DT. That being said, he's a project at best and needs some NFL coaching and strength training for a year or so.

The moves we're seeing Gettleman wants to build a young offensive line that can grow together in the seasons to come.

That's consistent with the philosophy the Giants have used for many years.

It all revolves around hitting on your early picks, and finding potential wherever you can. The better you draft, the better your team. Not a new idea, but it seems almost mythical to achieve.

Best case, you do draft well enough to build, and keep, a solid core going, as well as keeping the shelves stocked for the future.

Right around 1/2 your roster is made up of 4th round or lower guys. The bottom of your roster says a lot about your team. Those 4th and lower guys with enough talent to push the starters for minutes. Those guys that fill out the depth chart. Those guys that do the grunt work, and make the team as a whole, better.

I would put our roster up there with anyone's, THAT is a new concept.

Lastly, I absolutely love how Gman has filled in the roster, as it comes to the draft. He can do BPA and not sweat a bit. All he has to do, is do his job. Evaluate and secure.

So far? He gots this.

tl/dr version. Gman so far has proven he knows talent, and he knows value. Next is proving he can continue to upgrade and already proven team? This off-season gonna prove to ball out I tell ya what.

I'm looking forward to the offseason, but not for the same reason as in past years :)

The only knock I have on Gettleman so far is the Kugbila pick, but the jury is still out on that one.  I was very concerned with him not making major moves in the secondary on the OL, but knock on wood, things seem to be coming along very well.

Hey, when your only real gripe with a GM is a 4th round pick, things are going pretty well!

IMO, Kugs may yet to show something. He wanted to prove he belonged so badly, he hurt himself. And in the long run, it may have been for the best. He gets to rehab, watch and learn, and grow into the position, without a lot of pressure. Best case, by the time practices start next year, he is going to be ready, and he gonna want to prove himself all over again.

Ahhh, the circle of life.

Bond and Kugs are both projects. We have a great staff. Let's see how this works out. I vote Bond may actually help us this year. I mean? Is it really possible that Chandler could actually turn into a decent RG? Bond at least has some experience. Shouldn't that mean something?
