Credit where Credit is due

In the end of 2012 I was convinced that Ron Rivera didn't have the balls to be an NFL coach.

Over the last 5 or 6 weeks he has shown he has the balls to be a good NFL head coach.   Players react well to a former player who has been in the trenches before.  So Ron has that to his positive side.  But before a couple of weeks ago he wasn't showing that toughness that he was born into with the Bears.

So I give Rivera credit for bringing the team into a toughness I have never seen in a Panther Uniform.

The real credit goes to Shula and McDermott.  Especially Sean McDermott.  Both of our coordinators have taken their units and put their stamp on it.  Rivera gets his due credit because he is ultimately responsible for the game plans these two gentleman give.

Make no mistake though this is defense has a Rivera tang to it.  The flavor is McDermott.  He has the tools that he has craved since he got here.  A massive front line,  Linebackers from Hell and a Defensive backfield that refuses to be overlooked.  Our defense is McDermott flavored with a touch of Rivera.

Shula on the other hand took a high powered offense with a low third down conversion rate and turn it to a methodical smash mouth but efficient offense that is near the top in 3rd down conversion rate.  While the ESPN highlight reel is missing big Panther plays we are winning football games.

Give Ron Rivera his due because he is overall responsible but make sure you give Shula and McDermott their due.

They are as much a key reason why we are 6-3 and fight in each game as Riverboat Ron Rivera's balls to go for it on 4-1.

Great Job Sean and Mike

Make no mistake about it either.  Their doors will be knocked on come season end.  Both McDermott and Shula. will be in the conversation for a head coach position.

Rivera raised his stock quite a bit around the league. These past 7 games (yes, even the Arizona game) definitely got him noticed.

On his resume, he can say first time head coach, learned a great deal, and once he redefined himself and approach to football strategy he can take a team performing below average and make them a playoff threat.

Even if the Panthers don't make the playoffs, he will probably get serious consideration for another HC gig if he is replaced.

McDermott may get calls, but I doubt Shula will, unless this offense tears it up against prime-time competition. (NE, Saints, Jets)

(for some strange reason I think we get into a shoot-out with NewEngland and prevail).

The only way a shootout will happen in this game is if the Panthers are te ones doing the shooting.  I have seen enough to know that teams just can't score on this defense.  If they do score it makes Monsters Inc angry, and you wont like them when they are angry.

This you are wrong on Shula.  It is not the numbers but that ability ot keep the offense on a even keel.  When you are tops in 3rd down conversion you get noticed.

Shula is from a good bloodline and his ability to low down put this offense on an even keel wil get him noticed.   Whether he gets a job might be a long shot but he'll get a look.

McDermott's only problem has been that dumbasses though it was cute to call him McDerp without recognizing that he's likely a top 5 DC in the NFL. He took flack before, but it was mostly due to inheriting a unit that needed additions, work, and development. Same things Rivera had to deal with team wide.

You guys are hilarious. Good bloodline and tangs and all....yeah right.

First off, don't you think it would be prudent to see if the offense can score more than 10 points against good defenses (seahawks and 49's) before crowning Shula HC material?

And why would anyone call on McDermott when he's only had a half of a good season. Last season was OK but nothing special. You seem to have forgotten that we have not played against a single "franchise" QB yet. IF, and that is a big if, we can shut down Brady and Brees, than I will give him his due but till then, he still has more to prove - especially if he is to be considered for a HC gig.

Enjoy what they are doing now but don't get too far ahead of yourself else you'll surely be disappointed later.

Those drops and overthrows left points on the field.  They should have had more against a top tier defense.  You cannot hold that against Shula.

McDermott is an outstanding DC.  This is the first season he has had the right tools to run his defense.

My point in the OP was that Rivera seems to be getting all the love but Shula and McDermott aren't.  I realize that is the business of the NFL but as fans of the Panthers we shouldn't forget our Coordinators.

And if you don't like how I write.  DON'T READ... no skin off my back.  Go ahead and start your own post.

I didn't mean to attack how you write. It's just that I keep seeing these post suggesting the coordinators are so good that they will soon be HC's someplace. If all it takes is a one good season, then there are a lot of coaches who would have been hired already.

I do agree that some of the success the Panthers have had this year is because of Shula and McDermott but again, I just think your getting ahead of yourself. As Fox use to say, your never as good as they say and your never as bad as they say.

I can appreciate you wanting to give credit where credit is due and again, I do agree they deserve recognition. Hopefully I'll have to come back to this post in a couple of months and eat my words!
