1996 defense was a bit older and not as good as this year's club IMO.  I'm thinking this defense is going to end up better than 2003.

2003 team allowed 304 points or 19 per game.

1996 team allowed 218 points or 13 per game.

2013 so far has allowed 115 or 12.77 per game.

While comparable with '96 I think this year's group is more impressive just based on the fact that the game was different in '96 or even 2003. The rules have changed dramatically to favor offenses since that time.

Yep, Ole Salt and Pepper, Sam Mills was a great defense!  That game in Green Bay hurt bad and we waited til 2003 to get to smell SB Trophy!!

Now, we got something truly special this year!!  Defense can carry us all the way to The Promise Land coupled with an Offense that is growing

from week to week. 

Looking forward to seeing us cruise through rest of schedule.  Cross your fingers we stay healthy!!!!!!!!!!!!

This. Rules have changed to give offenses leverage, plus the fact that offenses utilize the pass game a lot more. This defense is much more versatile. But a lot has yet to he proved. Brady, Brees, Brees, and-dare I say-Geno, will really reveal if we are an elite, all-around D.

REmember that day? I do. December 8th. I am pretty sure Boomer Esiason threw for 500 yards that day elsewhere in the league.

 

Kerry Collins lit up the niners. We shocked the world in similar fashion. Willie Green went off. Lamar Lathon had two sacks... as did the late great Sam Mills.

Thats when I knew we had something special going. We picked off Steve Young twice. They were favored by 9 and lost by 6.
