A look ahead to MNF

Defensive dominance. These two words are what's going to lead us to a big W on national TV. Everybody saw what we did to the 49er offense today. Our front 7 completely disrupted anything their offense tried to do and finished the day with 6 sacks and 5 tackles for loss. Not to mention holding one of the league's best offenses over the last 5 weeks to only 151 yards, no touchdowns, and a 2nd half shutout.

Now it's time to take a look at how New England's offense matches up to San Fran. For starters, NE has allowed almost twice as many sacks as SF (26 vs 15). They have also allowed 46 QB hits. SF has only allowed 31.

A quote directly from PFF stats which has the SF offensive line ranked 1st in the league, "The 49ers’ offensive line has a run blocking score over three times greater than the next highest. They have four men on our NFC Pro Bowl squad after seven weeks. They are, for want of a better word, awesome." I'd say we exposed their protection schemes and did a good job holding Gore to mediocre gains. They were definitely far short of an "awesome" performance today.

New England has the bulk of their carries off the center and guards at 42%, which is normal. When not running up the middle 40% of their carries are off the left side of the formation, versus only 18% to the right. This plays right into our strengths with Hardy right there to contain the edge. NE has almost as many holes on the o-line as we do. The numbers show that our defense should be able to make their offensive attack look extremely pedestrian. Coming home to Charlotte I fully expect our D to keep Brady on his back all night and carry us to another victory. Cam has a much better performance and we take this game 27-16.

Yep 38 and more.

I'll put it simply:

1.  Brady hates to get hit.  The more he gets hit the worse it will be for him.  He hates pressure.

2.  Panthers absolutely must run the ball, early and stay with it.

Today the OC made it a lot harder than it had to be.  Against the Patriots, they must run that ball.  They cannot think they can give Brady time.

I'm ready for next week already. The offense has some kinks to work out that have cropped up the past two weeks, from top to bottom. I really hope we finally start running Cam more. It would add a lot to this offense and I think it will settle him in quicker as well.

I'm already ready for it. 38 will be avenged, dammit. This team is poised to make a run the rest of the way. The defense will stay fired up, especially after today. The offense will improve. They have to. Expect Smitty to show up next week. You know he's chomping at the bit for this game, especially after his early struggles against the 9ers. I wouldn't be surprised to see him FINALLY have a 100 yard game with a TD or two. I also expect Cam to have his best performance of the year. If anybody is aware that he needs to right his play from the past 2 weeks, it's him.

I feel better about the game against New England for a few reasons:

1) Main reason, we have the type of defensive unit and scheme that gives Tom Brady trouble historically. If you can get hands in his face, if you can hit him, you have a shot. He has off days against our type of unit, always has been the book on him.

2) The Patriots don't see a lot of mobile QB's. Division of Miami, New York, Buffalo. They don't see a lot of looks of Wilson's Kaepernicks, Newton's, etc. Bill can make Ryan Mallett or some little WR play "Cam" in practice, but its not close enough to the real thing to make the difference. It's just not. They haven't seen a lot of Newton types.

3) The game is at home, and arguably the biggest home game in a number of years, definitely the biggest in the Newton/Rivera era. That said, we need to be loud and create a true advantage. None of this mediocre crowd stuff - yell until your throats are leather and help the team win.

4) The Patriots have a defense that can be scored upon. They're underrated, but they give up points. They're either shut down or they're awful. There is no in between for New England. In their game before the bye they gave up a shitload of points even though they won.
