individual soldiers have no true agency. a criticism of governments utilizing them is fair, but given the power dynamic and the role of nationalism/propoganda in determining how we view these things i don't think it's fair to run around clubbing soldiers over the head

No its not. I made the almost deadly mistake in enlisting. Its truly a choice. I would say a good 75% of people that join or do it so they can pay for college, not knowing all they have to do is fill out a FASFA. They're all Pawns, and believe it or not all have the power to leave.

Uh Hu. Now, could you tell me who that person is, or do you have no idea, and only posted it because you have this romantic idea that dying for your country is in anyway logical?

Good lord. You don't want to serve in the military? Don't join. You probably couldn't even pass the ASVAB anyway.

Only the poor fugs that have been in for 30 years and have been completely brainwashed are willing to die for you. The other 99% are just doing the job they are ordered to do. I'm sorry if a dissenting opinion really hurts your feelings that much.

every soldier in every nation across time has signed up for the military because of a sense of desire to defend their nation (even if it's also financially motivated.) no one signs up to fight for a country they think is doing bad things. each soldier may have small-scale agency, but as a whole they have none: as you said they are, in a sense, pawns. they are a tool of the government which decides when and where to use them.

but the very fact that you recognize this makes you a complete asshole (or moron) for not realizing that this should focus attention on the governments pulling the strings behind the scenes rather than the individual soldier on the ground who has, by all accounts, signed up to participate in the standing army of a nation-state, a fundamental component of any complex society.

basically awesomeness joined the military and thought that he could sit on base all day shitposting on the huddle. when it turns out military members have to do military things, he freaked and left. now he shitposts on the huddle about how we should have a giant welfare state that feeds him for doing nothing.

it's best to ignore him.

No, because there would be no pawns if people stopped drinking the kool aid and stopped enlisting, which is why I have a problem with the glorification of the US Military in the first place. They could out to poor areas, in poor high schools promising these kids a way out. Its sickening.
