San Francisco Newpaper: Cam Is Better Than Kaepernick

They’re both elite running quarterbacks with different running styles. Obvious. Their passing styles are even more different.

Kaepernick likes to throw the ball deep downfield to his first or second read and, if neither one is open, Kaepernick takes off and runs. He has not become the type of quarterback who stands in the pocket and goes through the full progression, looking at three or four receivers. That’s because he doesn’t thrive when there’s pressure in the pocket – he’s completing just 49 percent of his passes under pressure this season, third-worst in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus.

But Newton has become a progression-reading quarterback. Watch him against the Niners on Sunday. He’ll stand in the pocket and be calm, almost bored, and scan the whole field like he’s Tom Brady. He doesn’t seem to be worried about the pass rush – he’s completing a league-leading 75 percent of his passes when he’s under pressure this season.

“How do you defend Cam Newton?” Trent Dilfer asked rhetorically on a Bay Area radio station recently. “Teams have tried to put pressure on him and make him make quick decisions. He’s really adjusted well this year and has gashed teams with the quick throws. He’s a dilemma.”

In this way, Cam is a more advanced passer than Kap. And Cam is almost two years younger than Kap – Cam is 24 and Kap is 26.

This sums up the article to me:

"Cam also plays for a less talented team than Kap. The Panthers are more dependent on Cam than the 49ers are on Kap. Cam could run the 49ers’ offense no problem – hand the ball off or fake the hand off and read one or two receivers before scrambling. Kap probably couldn’t carry the Panthers’ no-name offense at this stage in his career the way Newton is carrying it right now."

I know I'm beaten to this but the second page has such a bad research error the article is almost worthless.

e: Also LOL at every article involving Jim Harbaugh and Cam randomly having that quote about Jim talking up how awesome a football player his 14 month old son is going to be

People have been critical of Cam for not going through progressions, but from what I have seen from Kaep this year, he really doesn't seem to through his progressions.

Cam will but sometimes he takes to long to do it. But he has gotten better.

A big key on defense will be putting them in passing situations. That means keeping Gore in check, and staying disciplined against the read option.

Kaepernick only reads half the field. Their offense is built around isolating his reads because he still can't get past his first or second. It'll take time but at some point they're going to have to actually run plays that utilize complex routes because they can't hide him behind that running game forever.

Cam still sits on his reads from time to time but he's gotten dramatically better as getting through them, and has a number of highlights based on his third read (Steve Smith's TD vs. Seattle, LaFell's TD @ Minnesota, etc.)

Yep. Athleticism doesn't last forever and it only gets you so far. If you continue using that style of play beyond the first few years of your career, you wind up with a guy in a state of perpetual breakdown like Vick.

If the Niners can't transition Kaepernick into a traditional quarterback who can read defenses and run a passing attack, he's going to have a short career window.

This is why Panther coaches are working with Newton to maximize his passing skills. They want a long term starter, not a flash in the pan.

My opinion - admittedly potentially biased - is that Newton has made more progress down that road than Kaepernick.

and pretty much explains our preseason, which consisted of under center drop back passing and zero options and very little shot gun

    • 100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
    • It will be awesome to have an improved stadium to lose in I guess....   https://www.yahoo.com/news/panthers-file-rezoning-bank-america-111500840.html     The Carolina Panthers have taken another necessary step toward renovating their home of the present and future. Panthers Stadium, LLC, filed its rezoning site plan with the city of Charlotte on Monday, initiating an important — if mostly technical — step toward renovating Bank of America Stadium. The filings state that the rezoning relates “primarily to technical aspects associated with improvements to Bank of America Stadium,” and that the rezoning is required because “the current stadium zoning is out of date” for the team’s stadium renovation plans.   The planned stadium updates include new seats installed throughout the upper and lower bowls; stadium safety and security enhancements; a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion; upgraded restrooms; exterior enhancements (including LED video boards) and more. Planning for the stadium renovation project will continue through 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and the renovation’s conclusion in 2029, The Observer previously reported.
    • In my dream, we somehow luck into a top 2 pick and someone wants a QB bad and doesn’t want anyone else to jump them. Somehow we’ll probably screw up the picks anyway, but it would be nice to do even partially what Chicago did to us. We’d have to lose out, which is a decent possibility unless Tampa is resting. We need Atlanta to stay within a game because Atlanta beat Tampa twice. The rest of the draft slots are who knows because Jax plays the Raiders and then Tennessee and you never know who will rest starters. I think we are top 7 unless we somehow pull out 2 more wins. The 4 win teams have higher SOS and there is only one 5 win team with the same SOS. If we win 1 of 3, we still should stay in top 7. If we lose out and the Jax games work for us, we can easily be top 3.
