Panthergurus mock offseason

Key Carolina Free agents to sign:

Greg Hardy- The #1 priority in the offseason without overpaying hopefully.

Hakeem Knicks- Between Smith, the emergence of Ted Ginn Jr. and Brandon Lafells consistency, we could have one of the better and deeper receiving corps in the NFL which is important since Cam is distributing the ball better lately.

Brandon Lafell and Ted Ginn Jr.- These two are important for depth and for their very specific contributions to the team.

Jordan Gross- We need another year or two from him until we can get an elite replacement.

Mike Mitchell- This guy has been great for the defense and I want him back.

Collin Cole- Been great to have this vet to teach the young guys.

Drayton Flourence- we don't know if captain will be back this coming year and we could really use his veteran presence with the young guys.

Quinten Mikell- Good depth at safety and has done a good job of leading the back 4.

Captain Munnerlyn- would like to have him back but I don't know if he will command too much money since he has had a good year this year.

1st Mike Evans 6-5 225 lbs WR Texas A&M- I know that we need offensive line REALLY bad but this guy is big time and would give the offense 1 of the best red zone targets in college football. He could be here a long time and be a great long term #1 option for cam.

2nd Louchiez Purifoy 6-0 195 lbs CB Florida- A big corner who can do it all. He's also a good special teamer. He would be a nice replacement for slackers in the secondary that just aren't cutting it. ie Norman, Thomas etc.

3rd Anthony Steen 6-2 310 lb OG Alabama- This guy has championship pedigree and could be a guy that comes in and adds depth to a young offensive line (outside of Gross obviously)

4th Morgan Moses OT Virginia 6-6 325 lbs- I don't know much about this guy but lookin at his position and height/weight combo, he sounds like more of a mauler type of tackle that may take time to develop but would once again be good depth for a young offensive line.

5th Xavier Grimble 6-5 255 lbs TE USC- This could be a cheap answer to our #2 TE issue that we have had. I know Brandon Williams is on the roster but not a bad idea to get insurance in case he can't do as well as we think he can.

6th Keon Lyn 6-1 201 lb CB Syracuse- This guy is big and fast the only problem is that he's hurt. Drafting injured players is risky especially when they're out an entire year. But it's a sixth round pick and this is where you take you gambles right.

7th Chaz Sutton DE 6-4 263 lbs South Carolina- Although I think we should resign hardy to keep up our dominant front 7, there's always the possibility that he doesn't sign here. So you take a fly on a guy that may or may not contribute.

7th Jeremy Deering 6-1 200 FS Rutgers- A big safety that may be able to come into our practice sqad and later contribute if not oh well

Potential Starting lineup:

Offense:

QB: Cam

RB: Williams/Stewart

FB: Tolbert

LT: Gross

LG: Amini

C: Kalil

RG: Wharton

RT: Moses ®

WR 1: Knicks/Evans

WR 2: Smith/Lafell

TE: Olsen/Williams

Seeing what the DLine draft last year did for our defense and with Gross way long in the tooth, I don't see how we don't hit the OLine early and secure the future of the offense.  I remember Cam on his back last season and he cannot get it to any receiver from there.  And, as mentioned, Evans could go top ten anyway.

If a great OT is there, he should be ours, if not, then look for an elite WR or CB.

new objective. give up late round pick for Andre Johnson. cry/die from happiness

As good as it would be to have Johnson on our squad, he simply makes too much money. Next year his cap hit will be $12,000,000 and we cannot nearly afford to pay him that. We are projected to have $18,000,000 in cap for next year, so in short there is no way that we have Andre Johnson on the Panthers next year at his current price.

Restructure:

Charles Johnson(DE)-  $16,000,000 cap number is ridiculous

Steve Smith(WR)- Hopefully he's all in for a Super Bowl run

Release:

Charles Godfrey(FS)- He's an afterthought now

Chase Blackburn(OLB)- Klein and Senn replace him easily

Dwan Edwards(DT)- Hopefully not, but Hurney put us in a bad spot

This puts us at approximately $25,000,000 for cap space

Resign-

Jordan Gross(LT)- Utmost importance, best player on the line... 2 years, $10,000,000

Greg Hardy(DE)- Only if he settles on a reasonable price, if not let him walk... 4 years, $32,000,000 (Contract must be back-loaded, $5,000,000 cap hit)

Mike Mitchell(FS)- Again only resign if reasonable, no need to overpay... 4 years, $15,000,000 (Contract must be back-loaded, $2,500,000 cap hit)

Drayton Florence(CB)- Good veteran, like a coach on the field... 2 years, $2,000,000

Colin Cole(DT)- Good depth, built like a brick-house, great against the run... 1 year, $1,000,000

Graham Gano(K)- Good teams always have a good kicker... 3 years, $4,500,000

Ben Hartsock(TE)- Very undervalued and under appreciated player, phenomenal blocker... 2 years, $2,000,000

Richie Brockel(FB)- Same as Hartsock, as long as we run the power running offense these blockers are very valuable... 2 years, $1,500,000

Cap from resignings- $17,750,000

Remaining Cap- $7,250,000

Sign drafted rookies and then see what else is available in the free agent market.

Free Agency- Don't expect much here

Jared Allen(DE)- This is only possible if we let Hardy walk, which is a good possibility because he wants to much. Allen is a good veteran who attacks the LT and is in the twilight of his career and he wants a taste of success, which we can give him. Preferred route to bringing back Peppers... 2 years, $8,000,000*

*If we do go this route, we will have extra money to spend on resigning our free agents. So this opens up the possibility of bringing back Ginn, Lafell, Captain. Also we could let Hardy walk and use the rotation of Addison, Alexander, and Horton to compliment CJ. If this route is taken we can resign almost all of our free agents, and it wouldn't be a big surprise because of the cap hell we are in.

Draft- This will be the main way to improve our team, because we are not blessed with much cap flexibility. So hitting on these picks has to be done.

1st round- Allen Robinson(WR-Penn State)

I'm a bit skewed as a Penn State fan, but it's a toss up between him and Jordan Matthews from Vanderbilt. I believe Robinson has a much higher upside, but Matthews is more NFL ready.

2nd round- James Hurst(OT-North Carolina)

Local product who had a good game against Clowney. Can develop him on the right side, while Gross is still here.

3rd round- Deion Blue (CB-Alabama)

Alabama corners are very disciplined and that is something I love. He is not the most physically talented, but I think he could flourish in our zone blitz concept.

4th round- Devante Parker(WR- Louisville)

He compares favorably to Lafell, benefits from being in a pro system at Louisville. Also he has Teddy throwing to him, so adjusting to Cam shouldn't be much of a jump.

5th round- JaWuan James(OT-Tennessee)

Big body guy with alot of upside. Plays on the same team as Antonio "Tiny" Richardson so hopefully he picked up things. James has the talent to be a starting RT, but has to sure up the fundamentals.

6th round- Keith McGill(CB-Utah)

Big for a corner, measuring in at 6'2 so I'm willing to take a flier on the man from Utah. Also with our past successes from Utah, which includes Steve Smith, Jordan Gross, and Star.

7th round-Bryn Renner(QB-North Carolina)

Local QB who can hopefully step in and replace Derek Anderson. Jerry Richardson loves bringing in local products.

7th round-Chaz Sutton(DE-South Carolina)

The last time we took a late round flier on a DE from the SEC, we ended up with Greg Hardy. Cross your fingers and pray for the best.
