I was leaning toward PS4 but now will go and get an XBOX1.

I play Madden or what ever football will come out and the new PS4 controllers do not have analog buttons. That is important in Madden bc it a tap of the button will lob the football and holding it down will bullet pass it. The PS4 controller will not be able to distinguish holding or tapping....like ur mom.

Not too many other games utilize the analog abilities of the controllers so PS4 moved away from seeing it as a need.

I am intrigued by the media dedication of the XBOX after they revamped that initial disasterous reveal presentation where the policies were horrible.

XBOX online is so much smoother and if I will have to pay for online play I will go with the better online experience as PSN online has so much lag and unresolved issues.

Madden, Fifa and occasional other games iis mostly all i play so it dictates which system I am on.

All football games utilize the analog control system so it applies to other games. As for online play I will go with the company that has done the better job over the years...

I am pretty loyal to PS3 as I got a red ring on the original XBOX watching a Bubba Ho-Tep DVD.

Never had issues with PS3 other than having a lower quality version of Madden and laggy online play which is a huge issue. I was at a friends house to play his XBOX360 and it was so much better despite his lower internet connection.

Madden lags on PS3 just scrolling through the menus offline.

If you want, you can dual boot.  You can build your own Steam Machine and put Steam OS on it.  They're even going to release the CAD specs so you can build a case exactly like theirs.

 

You can also buy a low end Steam Machine to stream games from your gaming rig.

 

Steam Machine will work with netflix, etc. Steam OS will be open source, so there is no limit to its potential.  I don't really use Microsoft Office.  The only reason I'm married to Windows is Direct X.

 

I'm looking for some Steam Machines with AMD processors and Radeon cards that will not only blow away Xbox One and PS4 in performance, but also undercut their prices by 50-100$.

 

Plus Steam Machine will launch with a catalog that's 300 games large.  No other next gen console can claim that.

 

The big obstacle will be getting directx to work on a linux platform, but I'm pretty sure they're going to fix that, which will bring the Steam Machine's catalog to over 3000 games.

 

Also, the ultimate in backwards compatibility.  I can play games that are 3 generations old on my pc, if I choose to do so.

 

Console manufacturers don't use specialized hardware to save money.  It actually costs them extra to do so.  They're taking a loss on the hardware.  They do it so they can keep their share of the market on lockdown.  It won't be just Steam making Steam Machines, it will be multiple manufacturers producing them, and they will be in competition with each other.  I expect there to be Asus Steam Machines, Gateway Steam Machines, etc.

 

And yes, you can upgrade them if you choose to do so.  I won't be buying one, but I will be going dual boot once Steam OS will play Direct X games.

 

I don't disagree with you at any point, but the question I have is how well it will compete in the living room space.  PC gamers are going to continue to be PC gamers.  Will the steambox open a new avenue for non-PC gamers?  Will it offer enough compelling reasons for folks to by pass the PS4/X1 for a PC centric system, which lacks a lot of the side features that have become console standards?

 

I love the idea of the steambox and system, but if valve & co are trying to compete with the console guys, how long before their boxes can compete as seemlessly as the consoles not only to games, but also to the lifestyle (netflix, social networking, ect) that people have come to use their gaming systems for.

 

I will probably build a my own steambox/gaming system, but it's still going to be hard for me to use that as a primary when I can tell my xbox "Xbox, find the Panthers game" (which remains to be seen how well that will work, but that's the promise from M$).  I look forward to seeing what kind of features people can create for the steambox.

 

On a side note, I'm really looking forward to the implementation of AMD's Mantle, its deep programming language accessible on AMD hardware.  That could make better use of the resources and hardware in AMD system (including the PS4/X1).  Color me excited right now for the future of gaming.

they'll be ready to do all of that on launch.  the question is, are microsoft and sony prepared to step up with their consoles and bring things to the table that the steam machine will?

 

as far as voice recognition...yeah.  i can see that totally not working well at all.

 

really, you don't think Steam OS will include a browser?   Valve is actually working on it as a counter measure to Windows 8, not ps4 and xbox1.   but it will compete with them anyway.

 

how does not paying for your online service sound?   a more functional online experience already awaits on steam compared to what you have on the consoles.  group chat with 50 people, voip included.   private voip chats.

 

there are things that Steam already does that consoles won't do for another 3 generations.

 

if they would integrate guild competition, they'd rule the world

 

but as far as competing with xbox and ps4...there will always be some people that are too stubborn and set in their ways to embrace something as radical and progressive as the Steam Machine

 

everything that works on Linux will work on Steam OS.

 

as far as building your own gaming rig or steam machine, valve just cut the cost of the OS out of the overhead, since Steam OS will be free

Yay more PC elitist attitudes who think there's no value to console gaming whatsoever. Just what we give a fug about in a console thread. Look, all platforms have their place in the market. Are PC games that are also on the Xbox and PS platforms superior? Absolutely. That doesn't mean that each console doesn't have a healthy number of exclusives that are extremely enjoyable and justify the purchase. I'm a gamer. I enjoy lots of different games. Which is why eventually I'll add an Xbox One to my collection that already includes a gaming PC, WiiU and will include a PS4 tomorrow afternoon. Not really sure why that's such a bad thing, or how buying some triple A exclusives is buying into "clever marketing strategies"....

I think its really easy for PC gamers to go all high and mighty too often.  I agree with C47, they have their place with the consoles.  I am a console gamer.  Does that make me a sheep?  I don't think it does.  Frankly, I can't afford to build a good PC.  Please, don't give me the "for $400 you can build a gaming PC that runs laps around a console" in regards to the newest generation.  360/PS3, sure, but there is much to be seen regarding the consoles.  I've done the "pricing builds" and I always come in well over that because: 1. I need a good case that isn't 4 feet tall.  2. I like my PCs to have SSDs (which kind of blow price up completely.  3.  I like good video cards, and I tend to go Intel for PC processors because I don't just like to game.  So no, $400-$500 won't get me what I want.

 

On the other hand, a console experience is pretty straight forward.  Maybe I'm getting lazy in my age here, but I like to grab controller, turn it on, play games with minimal fuss (I'm looking at you PS3 with your crazy updates/too long installs!).  PCs are like expensive sports cars in that you need to maintain them to a greater degree than you do a console.  Prior to my RROD, my xbox ran like a champ.  Fixed the RROD, runs like a champ.  I can play for HOURS (which I did this weekend), and nothing except hot air.  PCs, you can get too crazy with your setting, your clocks, your ram configurations.  Lets not get into driver support or OS issues, ect. that effect PCs in general.  You can tweek for hours to find the right balance of performance versus shinies.  That was cool when I was 20...and even then there weren't as many tools like today.

 

The steambox will be an interesting development.  I want to see more.  From what I've seen of the PS4 and XboxOne, I'm going to continue to call it a "wait and see."  I got really jazzed looking a the next gen graphics, but the reviews are saying the same thing "pretty doesn't always make it better."  I'm happy with my 360/PS3, and LOTRO on my laptop.  I still want to see something that really says "This is what next gen really feels like."  Not another clone.
