what 49er fans are saying

I think the key to a win on Sunday is not playing their game, even if that takes the Panthers out of what they like to do.

Offensively:

- Spread formations will help keep Aldon out of the backfield. Or at least twins on his side. If you go TE or 1 WR on his side, he's coming. Please do not leave a TE one on one with Aldon. Remember DEN last year with Von Miller?

- Everything should be quick. Let Cam pick them apart with short passes, and get him out of the pocket on longer developing plays. The pocket is a coffin against these guys.

- Mismatches are key. Olsen against a LB or Smitty in the slot.

- This may be a good week to lean heavily on Stewart and Tolbert. Stewart is fresh and he's a powerful straight line runner. DWill is a little too cute for these LBs. They'll make quick work out of him.

Defensively:

- I think Keek and Star take away their bread and butter interior run game for the most part. They love power I, but I can't see them being able to run consistently up the middle against the Panthers. And there is no way they'll have success getting outside. They like to use TEs as outside run blockers. TD and Luke will eat that up before it even gets started.

- That forces Kap to throw the ball. His WRs not named Boldin are bad, like Armanti Edwards bad. Take away Boldin and Vernon Davis, and keep contain on Kap, and he'll make mistakes. His other WRs can't get open. An occasional third down spy with TD wouldn't be a bad idea.

- And for the love of all things good, please don't leave Captain one on one with Vernon Davis. It's not even fair. And he'll win the game by himself.

I understand your point there, but that really isn't the case in SF.

There is no lead too large to overcome that would force them to stop running the ball. Down huge in Philly in 2011, they never stopped running and came back to win. Down big in the NFC Championship game last year they just kept running and came all the way back. LaMichael James scored once and Gore scored twice. In the Super Bowl they got back int the game by both passing AND running (people don't realize that Kap actually threw for over 300 yards that day and Frank ran for over 100).

The 49ers have also shown the ability to run on teams that are good against the run. Not saying they'll be able to vs the Panthers...just saying they've been able to do that in the past.

SF has had an issue with receivers getting any separation...that much is true. However, only 2 teams have been able to completely shut them down. The Seahawks IN Seattle (best secondary in the NFL) and the Colts (Vontae removed Boldin and Vernon didn't play). If you look at the niners receiving numbers its almost comical. Both Boldin and Davis are on pace for over 1000 yards, but nobody else even has 200. Kaps Qb rating passing to their "#2 WR" Kyle Williams is around 20. He sucks. Bad.

This is why getting Manningham back is SOOOOO huge. He doesn't need to be Julio Jones. Just being servicable would be enormous.

Still tho....had they not been playing the past 5 weeks with HUGE leads (up 28-3 on the Rams, 34-3 on Houston, 24-0 on Tenn, and 28-3 on Jacksonville) they'd have much more call to put the ball in the air.

All of those teams BTW suck pretty bad. Not trying to say Niners will win because they have been dominant...just making the case that they have dominated bad teams so severely that their statistics are misleading. I mentioned the Packers because they had to throw...and they did. The game was close vs Arizona so they had to throw and Kap had 252 yards and 2 TDs.

What those two games had in common tho was 1 guy just going nuts receiving...Boldin for over 200 vs GB and Vernon with 180 vs Arizona.

Again...this is why getting Manningham and Crabtree back is so huge.

Crabtree BTW was just cleared to practice today, but you won't see him on Sunday.

Opponent matters.

If you get down to us.....you would be foolish to just run run run.

Have to take into account opponent. Carolina holds onto the ball in terms of time of possession better than anyone. They also don't let teams score early.....no teams. We have allowed 1 TD all season in the first half.

Can't predict how a game will unfold. But what we know to date.....we have better odds than anyone on your schedule to shut down your run and make you pass. Doesn't mean it is definite but a realistic outcome.

Carolina doesn't have to sell out to stop the run. They haven't against tough runners. If they can force Kapernick to beat them as a QB.....they probably like those odds. If they can get up early which they have on everyone....they probably wouldn't mind you running the rest of the game

All of which is why it'll be a dogfight. The 49ers attempt to do the same thing. This is why they usually have such huge leads early in games. They suffocate you. They play the same "keep away" game the Panthers do with TOP. Again tho...the second halves of blowouts blow those statistics.

Opponent does matter. Didn't mean to suggest otherwise. I'm just saying they will never abondon the run. Its not in their DNA. Even if they are having very little to no success with it, they'll keep trying.

I love how I keep seeing JH with time to prepare is perfect. Didn't he have 2 weeks to prepare for the ravens and his team came up it completely flat and without the blackout that game wouldn't even have been close?

Total BS.

Kap had almost 150 yards of his 300 in the first half. The only thing that changed in the second was that the niners D asserted itself, the O stopped turning the ball over (James fumble in Ravens territory and a Kap INT) and they started punching those redzone opportunities into the endzone (were settling for FG early). The 49ers were able to move the ball all day against the Ravens.

Yea, I told them we are 1st in total points, 2nd in total D, 2nd in rushing, 10th in pass D and they still think it's going to be 40-10

Their all using the Cardinals game as a point of reference, nothing more, nothing less. Too bad they don't realize that when we win they will be one game ahead the red birds.

Tell me the half time score again? And then the ravens added another one with their return. You can make excuses all you want but the fact of the matter is JH didn't prepare his team to come out swinging.

Faulty reasoning.

They came out swinging. They were moving the ball. They couldn't punch it in when close and turned the ball over twice.

Please. Don't try to tell me you know something more than I do about a game I've watched 50 times.

Your defense was arguably the best in the league last year and you guys gave up 21 points in the first half and a quick score at the start of the second. If that is having your team prepared to you then you don't know football at all

My main concern is, when we beat a soft team like the 9ers.... we get a little too confident, and then when a physical team like the Pats come to town, we get sucker punched.

I doubt we'd be overconfident for a MNF game
