Along the Sidelines - Falcons Edition

If you are saying it was Luke's job to cover Gonzo 30 yards down field then I am telling you that is a stupid ass assignment.

He is a MLB. not a safety.

There is not a MLB in the league that would win that matchup 1 on 1.

Not sure who missed the assignment but Luke wasn't happy with himself after the play.  Players / coaches came up to him on the sidelines and he wanted nothing to do with it.  I'm pretty sure he had the middle on the compressed field.

Not to debate the specific Defensive play call but iirc we drafted Luke over a safety specifically for his coverage abilities against TE's, especially Gonzo and Graham.

It is not outside the realm of possibility to expect Luke to cover that route/zone and to cover it well.  But either he or Mikell were not on the same page.

Derrick Johnson, Navarro Bowman, Patrick Willis.

He's amazing, and everything is an opinion. If you think he's the best that's okay. I may disagree, but that by no means your wrong.

I like all three of them. Dont get me wrong. I would put Daryl Washington up there too.

Patrick Willis may be the only MLB that I have over Kuechly at this point. Johnson, Bowman, and Washington are better athletes than Kuechly, but KEEK brings more to your defense. He knows DEFENSE, read and audible plays, and position his players in the right place. The rest of the guys doesnt do that. Bowman, Johnson, and Willis has tremendous players all around them. They're just out there making plays. Luke Kuechly may probably be the smartest of all LB in the NFL. Even in his worse game, he's still am able to contribute largely on defense.

KC could lose a DJ. SF could lose a Bowman or Willis and there would be no drop offs in their defense. I dont want to think about losing KEEK for a single game (not jinxing KEEK). That's how much he means to this defense. He's the engine.

this kuechly argument has me thinking about the "2/10. has pointy elbows. would not bang" arguments.

nitpicking at its finest.

he is the best mike in the league. not perfect. not immune to getting beat on one play when left alone to cover one of the best pass catchers in league history, aruably the best TE to ever play the game, and future HoFer.

but still he's the best in the league.

It reminds of the 2/10 argument even though I'm say he's really amazing and we're lucky to have him? Eh.

I think he clearly should have stayed with gonzo but just lost him for a lil bit. It does not matter either way, because he led a defense that had a second half shut out and the team got the win.

As for the best MLB discussion, it's not a coincidence that the other LB's I mentioned are part of some of the best defense's in the NFL, AS IS Luke. One advantage Luke certainly has is his youth. Plenty of time to get better and stay healthy. The other two have a few years on him, ours is barely a second year player.

Officially it was a 17 yard pass but it was well into the endzone. Probably 25 yards total.

After watching the replay Luke was in good position if he doesn't step up to cover the under route. These passes that go for TDs cannot always be on the safety. Kuechly and TD both took the underneath route when one should've dropped an extra three yards. Ryan must have looked kuechly off by looking at Douglas and then went over the top. I have Nfl replay and will check it again but that's my takeaway. I doubt we will hear about it outside the huddle.
