A little love for Chris Scott

Chris Scott has come from nowhere and is IMHO one of the most improved players on our team. So, I wanted to take a little time to show some appreciation for a player that most of us thought was camp fodder!

Scott was played his college ball at Tennessee where he split time at Guard and Tackle.  With a 7th round draft grade, it was surprising that the Steelers drafted him in the 5th.  After injuring his foot in his rookie campaign, he was placed on the PUP list.  Then after seeing game time in two contests the following year, the Steelers released him.

The 6ft 4in, 320 pound Scott would spend the next year traveling from team to team looking for a roster spot.  After spending time on Pittsburgh's practice squad, then being resigned by Pittsburgh, he was released and found his way to Green Bay's practice squad.  Then, Tampa Bay.  Then the Titans.

By the time he was signed by the Bills, Scott had ballooned up to 360 pounds.  After failing his conditioning test, he was cut.  His coach stated:

"We did wind up releasing a player, Chris Scott. It’s just unfortunate in this profession. We have expectations as coaches coming in and we didn’t feel that Chris fulfilled his expectations to us, his teammates or the coaches so we let him go.”

That led him to us.  During his first practice with the Panthers, he was carted off the field for dehydration.  It was obvious he was still out of shape.  A lot of folks around here didn't have very much hope for him.  But, over the last few months, we have seen Scott trim down from 360 to a healthier 319.  Forced into the starting role at RG via injury, Scott's improvement over the course of these 7 games is one reason for our success this season.

TLDR:  Scott was fat, and unwanted.  Turned it around in Carolina.

For some players, trial by fire is the way for it to finally click. Trending up? Hmmmm... So is the team. I just want a line that has a chance to gel with what we got.... Sounds like Scott is a big part of that now for better or worse. Keep pounding Chris Scott.

Doesn't really matter now but FYI he was one of the top high school OL in the country out of high school in 2005. He was an Army All American and part of a Tennessee recruiting class many thought was the best in the country. One of many/most in the NFL I know, just saying he's no Johnny-come-lately is all.

Not sure he has turned much around....

He is comically the worst rated player on our team per PFF. No one close to grading out as bad

Part of the reason Williams isn't running that well of late is bc he is limited in the gaps we can run at....Scott might be the worst run blocking starter in the NFL. When we play tougher fronts our right side still shows to be a big liability. We also get predictable bc of how bad Scott and Bell are against better fronts. Horrible run blocking, poor pass protection

Decent enough as a stopgap.  probably worth keeping as a backup.

Not a long-term answer, though.

Yea he is a solid backup, shouldn't be the answer at RG. I've seen him miss blocks so many times. We definitely could use an upgrade.
