Beason Compensation: 7th round pick

a 7th rounder barely even counts as compensation, you're basically just getting your first choice of UDFAs.

the giants were desperate as hell, you can't tell me if Gettle puts his foot down and says "its a 6th or no deal" that they won't take that offer. and yeah there's 30 other teams and Beason had JUST been taken out of the starting lineup and the trade deadline was a ways off. no reason not to hold onto him until you get at least a halfway reasonable offer

this really just looks like he did his old buddies in NY a favor and didn't care too much about getting the best deal

You really think Beason would be a starting MLB for 30 teams in this league, right now?

Three years ago maybe.

I have 0 emotional attachment....it's like saying it was emotion and not logic when the AE trade went down...

Just awful decision, not emotion.(in regards to the AE trade)

Drafting Armanti wasn't from emotion.

It was from stupidity.

Hence, why the guy who did it is unemployed.

7th at best....

But that leaves us with Beason as a backup for our deep playoff run this year...never know what might happen...

Again, he wasn't willing to play that role.

Maybe you can force a guy who's playing for an extension or something to still play hard and not cause any distractions, but with a guy who's a free agent at the end of the season, not so easy.

There are thirty other teams with injured linebacking corps that needed a starting MLB?

Musta been a hell of a rash of injuries that somehow didn't make the news

The Giants gave up something because they had a need.  If not for that, chances are they wouldn't have done the deal either.

Reality: There wasn't any market for him.  We're lucky we got anything at all.

You just said that there wasn't a market for him yet the Giants had a need....therefore it was a very small market but a market indeed.

We could have played harder ball with the Giants at least....

No

My point really was that Gettle was doing his old organization a favor

how can anyone even think a 7th rounder is a good deal. what would be a bad deal then? well hey at least we didn't trade him for an 8th round pick !! derp derp derp

And probably gotten nothing at all.

And no, that isn't a better outcome.

We were lucky to get anything.

The only person that got done a favor here was Beason.

Nobody else was gonna give us a higher pick to get him.  We got one from the Giants because they were desperate.

Because the alternative was nothing at all.

He wanted out.  One team needed him because they were desperate.

Nobody else was giving us squat, unless you know of someone else whose linebacker corps was decimated by injury at that time.

we didn't shop around, we didn't hold on to him up until the trade deadline

you don't know what other teams would have given up, or even what the giants would have given up at a maximum. stop trying to pretend like you do

when it comes down to it i would have rather kept his a backup and taken a compensatory than give him away for almost nothing

so far to me Beast still looks like the guy from 2 years ago .. why is it automatically assumed he will never be the same? That's BS

Yes - we have an incredible young MLB - but you don't give up talent like that for a 7th rounder

when people on the huddle say "it was a great deal - people on here don't understand the business of football" ... well apparently this organization does not either - how many games have we won over the past 3 1/2 years?

I'm tired of losing - but more importantly I'm tired of us not being willing to trade 6-7th rounders for players with potential .. if we draft a 6-7th round player it's purely based on potential at that point in the draft - why not trade for a proven commodity and try to win today and not 5 years from now? Then we turn around and give away a guy like Beast for a 7th?!?!?

it seems like we're always in rebuilding mode unlike some teams that want to win now every year (and do)

How much do you guys think a starting linebacker with serious injuries is worth?

1. It's not a sought after position like WR

2. Players on an IR streak with an albatross contract aren't really in demand commodities

3. It actually hurts the team to have somebody playing awful at one position because the one he plays better at is occupied by one of the best in the game.

4. It also hurts the team if they bench you and you start chirping in the locker room

The nfl isn't like hungry hungry hippo. The sum of its parts doesn't dictate how good a team actually is

That's what is hilarious to me too.

We have a franchise that's great at losing football and doing loser trades(not talking about Beason either)

So yea I always get a chuckle from those comments as if the Panthers have historically shown some great football genius.
