Beason Compensation: 7th round pick

His leadership on the team this year would have been worth more than a 7th .. plus we gave away an all-pro LB to a team in the same Conference where he will thrive for years .. including when they play us!

Realistically, how much leadership are you gonna get from a guy who wants out?

As far as that topic goes, maybe if we didn't have Kuechly and Davis it would worry me.  As it stands, not so much.

And frankly, I've got serious doubts about Beason "thriving for five more years".

Agree it sucks.

Losing him and getting nothing back would have sucked worse.

He was never gonna get back to being what he used to be playing OLB here.

Sometimes you just have to cut your losses.

While it would have been worse this is nearly as close to getting nothing back as you can get...

Hopefully this is a conditional pick and escalates if he plays well

Gettleman definitely gave the Giants a discount, I bet he didn't even see if he could get more for him from another team. Schefter would have reported that Beason was on the trade block, but this was a direct trade from Gettle to Reese. Bullshit.

Here, he would only be of value as a backup MLB for about 12 games-then we get nothing for him.  It is not a good thing to keep a former star on the bench for the remainder of the year--it is awkward at best, toxic at worst.

The Giants got a deal, but we unloaded more and were not hurt by trading Beason.  Beason cost us a game or two when on the field.  To us, getting a draft pick for a player not contributing in the final year of a deal coming off an achilles injury is good business.

You have to look forward and understand that Gettlemen is a businessman who is not going to reward past performance.  The best teams know how and when to cut ties.

Beason would have been an FA after this year, we would have gotten the same compensation or better, with compensatory picks

No GM in his right mind would have given us a higher pick for what we saw on the field through the first three games (not to mention the two full seasons before that).

Way too many people here still confuse what Beason used to be with what he is now.

I think he has already proven in the few games he's played that he's getting back to where he used to be - and I'm glad to see it - I absolutely loved the guy

A 6th that would have escalated to a 5th depending on how many games he started would have sufficed. A 7th is poverty, yes, Munnerlyn was a 7th but even finding depth in the 7th is a task. DJ Campbell lasted one season here.

Yeah, very good point,  but I think this was partially about doing a class act a solid.  I think this kind of thing helps us in free agency in the long run.
