Charles Johnson Getting Some MMQB Love

Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson is far from the prototypical pass rusher who makes a living on the edge, where lean and fast players rule. Yet he thinks his size (6-2, 285) works to his advantage because opposing linemen underestimate his speed.

“When they look at me, they think I’m not fast,” Johnson said this week. “But the first fundamental in pass rush is the get-off, and I pride myself on how I get off the ball.”

No matter where he lined up against the Bucs last week, whether he was at his usual end position or inside playing tackle in passing situations, Johnson used that explosiveness and a variety of pass-rush moves to rack up a league-leading 7.0 MMQB Pressure Points, earning him the Week 8 edge pass rusher award. He had two sacks, drew two holding penalties, had six hurries and another quarterback hit.

Those that think we vastly overpaid for CJ fall into 2 categories:

1) People that really don't have a full appreciation for the overall play of DE's, focusing strictly on sacks

or

2) People that don't know the market value of premier DE's.

Sure, maybe we could have shaved a million a year off his contract, but it's not like very good DE's are falling off trees, and the good ones cost money. After QB and maybe LT, it is arguably the most important position on the field.

We really have no place to complain. Is he getting paid a lot? Yeah. But he's been extremely productive, solidly healthy, hard working and a great locker room presence. In the realm of giant contracts we're getting what we paid for.

Remeber the offseason when everyone said Tampa's defense was going to be so good?  They have a total of 17 sacks which is not that bad.  The bad part is 5 have come from the MLB, which leads the team.  Their D-line has a total of 7 sacks.  The only way for them to get after the QB is to blitz, which exposed the secondary to a lot of 1 on 1 coverage.  I know their offense sucks but if you dont have a good D-Line in the NFL you can't have a good defense.

And don't even get me started on Atlanta, ughhh.

He has been worth every penny and has offered more production game by game than Peppers did the last few years in Carolina and in Chicago. Imagine if we were going against him this weekend when ATL was going hard at him and how far their defense has fallen by not properly addressing any of their front line in the last 4years.

They lose John Abraham and now have zero pass rush an overaged Osi just cannot carry by himself. Atl has a long way to go to get a defense established and has little cap room and has to extend Julio soon.

We overpaid for CJ because we could have signed him for less based on his market value at the time. We didn't want him going to Alanna so we threw a huge contract his way. More then likely he would have signed here for less, we offered way more than Atlanta and more than what was necessary to keep him in Carolina.

Having said that CJ has lived up to his contract and has been a stud on the field . I'm glad he is not in Atlanta.

3) People who were butthurt that their UNC DE crush was easily replaced the instant he left

4) People who don't realize how much he would have helped the Falcons (his home town team)

5) People that expect every Carolina player to take a dollar over the league minimum out of loyalty

Johnson has earned/been worth every fuging cent of his contract to date.

    • 100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
    • It will be awesome to have an improved stadium to lose in I guess....   https://www.yahoo.com/news/panthers-file-rezoning-bank-america-111500840.html     The Carolina Panthers have taken another necessary step toward renovating their home of the present and future. Panthers Stadium, LLC, filed its rezoning site plan with the city of Charlotte on Monday, initiating an important — if mostly technical — step toward renovating Bank of America Stadium. The filings state that the rezoning relates “primarily to technical aspects associated with improvements to Bank of America Stadium,” and that the rezoning is required because “the current stadium zoning is out of date” for the team’s stadium renovation plans.   The planned stadium updates include new seats installed throughout the upper and lower bowls; stadium safety and security enhancements; a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion; upgraded restrooms; exterior enhancements (including LED video boards) and more. Planning for the stadium renovation project will continue through 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and the renovation’s conclusion in 2029, The Observer previously reported.
    • In my dream, we somehow luck into a top 2 pick and someone wants a QB bad and doesn’t want anyone else to jump them. Somehow we’ll probably screw up the picks anyway, but it would be nice to do even partially what Chicago did to us. We’d have to lose out, which is a decent possibility unless Tampa is resting. We need Atlanta to stay within a game because Atlanta beat Tampa twice. The rest of the draft slots are who knows because Jax plays the Raiders and then Tennessee and you never know who will rest starters. I think we are top 7 unless we somehow pull out 2 more wins. The 4 win teams have higher SOS and there is only one 5 win team with the same SOS. If we win 1 of 3, we still should stay in top 7. If we lose out and the Jax games work for us, we can easily be top 3.
