Robert Griffin III’s passing problems raise questions about his ability to become elite

Although it would be easy to ascribe Griffin’s setback to the ongoing rehabilitation of his knee after reconstructive surgery, there’s more to the problem than rustiness. This season, the 2012 NFL offensive rookie of the year hasn’t demonstrated the confidence, instincts or efficiency quarterbacks need to thrive in the pocket.

On many plays this season, Griffin has been a one-read quarterback, usually locking in on top wideout Pierre Garcon or impressive rookie tight end Jordan Reed and failing to find an alternative when they are covered. Frequently, he waits for receivers to complete routes instead of releasing the ball in anticipation of them breaking free from coverage, giving defensive backs more time to disrupt plays.

Robert Griffin III used to be his team’s most uplifting player, but he is becoming a weight, maybe even a burden. Where is that fresh kid with the unbeatable combination of modesty and limitlessness? In his place is a player who’s coming off as an unteachable know-it-all. The guy has played just 22 games, and into that time he has packed a few random stabs at semi-greatness, followed by a lot of unseemly power machinations, and drivel about being a leader, without yet mastering his craft.

“I’m just really focusing on being the playmaker that I know I can be and not letting anybody else tell me how to play this game,” he said.

A second-year guy doesn’t want anyone telling him how to play this game? It’s the statement of someone who has perhaps not been as open to learning as he should have been. According to Hasselbeck, one problem with this Redskins offense is that Griffin doesn’t seem to have graduated to the next level of decision-making. He is not scanning the field and responding to what defenses show him.

He created this power play, but likes to disappear behind a smoothly cultured façade and leaderly sounding platitudes, which, if you analyze them, really mean, “I’m in charge here.”

Listen carefully: “I make sure no one becomes a cancer on the team,” Griffin said earlier this week when asked how he was dealing with failure. “Your job as a quarterback is to know how to manage people. I feel I’ve done a good job of that my whole career.”

There are more than a couple problems with the above statement, starting with the fact that it is utterly lacking in self-deprecation. Second, you’re a sophomore in the NFL. What career? You haven’t had one yet. Come back and talk to us when you’ve played 50 games. Or even 25.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and keep saying he just isn't healthy and missed a whole off season.

But between some of his comments like the examples above and the rumored power struggle with Shanahan, he is coming off as a spoiled brat.

Trying not to get too caught up in some of the stuff because I have seen how Cam has been treated by the press and taking his quotes out of context, but from afar that is how it seems to me.

I use to like him but RGKnee has come off as incredibly egotistical (Seriously? Weekly press conferences for his stupid knee?). I mean, this guy is so full of it that he hated the idea of being compared to Cam Newton instead of Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning. What exactly has he done to warrant such comparisons? Nothing.

To your statement: What has Andrew Luck done to warrant being better than Peyton and Rogers?  Nothing! Yet no one really seem to have a problem with that comparison.

Also, RG III hates being compared to Cam as much as Cam hated being compared to Vince Young and J. Russell. He knows what's behind the comparisons. The difference is, RG III comaprison is against Cam and was meant to be positive for him. Those in the media weren't trying to mold his image into the negative images they created for Vince Young and J. Russell, the way they was/is with Cam.

Anyway, I knew it was only going to be a matter of time until those who praised RG III was going to turn on him. IMO, those in the media were simply over praising him because they knew RG III was damaged goods and wouldn't last in the NFL because of his knee issues. He wasn't going to be a threat to their Chosen QB, Luck. They know Cam was/is the real deal but he's not Luck.

Jesus Christ your obsession with Andrew Luck is troubling.

I've never really cared how much attention RG3 got. Nor do the comparisons to Newton mean anything to me.

And no, he's never come off as fake to me. He seems mostly to be a good guy.

Those things aren't the issue...

The problem I've seen with RG3 since early on is that he's just not built to take the kind of pounding that an NFL quarterback takes. And worse, the system Shanahan has run with him has exposed him to even more punishment than might have been.

Said before and will say again: If he lasts five years in the league, I'll be shocked.

Maybe it's because I don't live in Panthers Huddle World, why you would preceive that. But in the real world, Luck and his "greatness" is all you hear. I can only ask and speak about what I observe on a daily basis.

Also, I find it funny that a Huddler would find me saying anything about Luck an Obsession. That's beyond the pot calling kettle black.

I'm guessing you have a theory on why Andrew Luck got voted AFC Offensive Player of the Week on a week when Newton had a great performance too?

I never have seen what all the fuss is about this guy.  I do think however too many people on here don't like him only because he got more attention than Cam last year and that's just juvenile.

It's not because "he got more attention than Cam last year". Yes, that would truly be "juvenile". Agreed.

No! That's not the reason. It's because most of it was undeserved. RG3  was a one read QB with deficiencies, who played in a gimmick offense, relying heavily on the run game which masked his deficiencies (though many could see them), while padded his stats last year.

He was also arrogant, and a manipulator, so completely different than his public image. Cam was/is actually like more what RG3 is supposed to be (a good guy, humble hard worker). And RG3 is more like what the media wants you to believe Cam is (arrogant, A "Me Guy", and entitled). All this was known last year, but the media completely ignored it.

That's why (at least with so many of us)!

PS: This article 'Spills the Beans on RG3', and answers the question (that so many of his fan boys loved to ask last year regarding), "well if he's such a bad QB how did he post such great numbers last year"?

Yes, it was the run game, the constant fakes, read options, pistol formation and trickery. It was the 'High School Offense' they ran. That's how.

Many of us have know this all along. It's just that media is usually loathe to talk about it, since they made you believe he was the "second coming" and Superstar (as NFL Network is promoting him right now vs Minnesota) all last season.

Ironically, Griffin dug his own grave/believed his own press by asking Shanahan to place him in a more passing oriented offense (rehab or no rehab; he would have still asked/complained for Shanahan to do this).

Oh well.

    • Excluding Carter, I think I can quickly sum up the conundrum at EDGE.  1. Promising Prospect with Major Wrinkles Jalon Walker - Size/Down-to-Down Position (ILB v. OLB) James Pearce - Reported issues in the locker room & beyond (one source) (another - Per C. Kinnan) Mike Green - SA Allegations/UVA Dismissal 2. Biggies lacking Pass Rush Skills (High Ceiling/Development types) There's the guys who test well, but don't have the tape and aren't the best pass rushers.  This is often a bust prototype with some success stories every now and again.  This includes: Shemar Stewart Mykel Williams 3. Donavon Ezeiruaku Best EDGE in college this season, has the length/span of a 6'5 guy - came in a hair under 6'3 247 (Bigger than Walker), better run defense chops than given credit for (83.6), & tested incredibly well.  So tape and testing both big fat green checks. Sooo with this said, this is where I say: Don't be shocked if we don't end up with an pass rusher (or) you hate our first round selection.  Walker is the least bust-able of the bunch here, but his impact may not be as big as you'd want year 1.  Bottom line is I hope we go BPA, think this kind of shows why it could be smart (But I do love Donovan). I just look at Nic Scourton, JT Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer, Princely, Elijah Roberts, Powell-Ryland, Savion Jones...there are guys with just as much upside we can land later.  I just don't see the value when Mason Graham, Tyler Warren, Will Johnson, or heck, even Colston Loveland could be available. I don't see the value in getting a Stewart or Mykel over them. But also, don't sleep on Ezeiruaku.  And while I'm at it- Derrick Harmon if we're looking at the DE 3-4, especially if we trade down.  Out of all of these prospects, those are the two that if you just think back through the college season, they terrorized offensive lines and got it done.  Long story short- offseason can distort.
