What grade does Dave Gettleman get...

I see what people are saying--that Gettlemen did not support Cam---but we have 2 starting Guards that he found and signed.  We have a pretty dynamic #3 WR.  While not the best, reality has to enter the picture.  He was over the cap by $16 million.

A defense supports Cam..  It provides field position.  It does not require the QB to press to keep up with the scoring.  We have been in EVERY game, even when our offense was not getting it done.  With our defense, the offense only needs 2 TDs to win on average.

Players Gettlemen brought in that are upgrades:

Mitchell over Godfrey

Lester/Mykell over Nakamura

Ginn over Murphy

Blackburn over (injured) Beason

Scott over Hangartner

White over Norman

Star over Fua/Kearse

Cole over Fua

Short over Neblett

Florence over Dockery

Wharton over whoever would have played LG when Silotolu was injured

That is 11 players that were weaknesses last year he upgraded.  He did this while cleaning up Hurney's mess.

While I agree that he has work to do, right now, how does he get anything less than an A+?

How do you argue with this?

Dockery was actually signed by the interim GM.  Hurney fired 22 Oct, Dockery signed free agent 24 Oct

The most amazing part was he only had 5 picks to do it with.

And not one high-priced free agent.  He did what he said he would do--find value in the bowels of free agency.  Unloved players on other teams with skills--which means that he has an eye for talent.

I give him a B+ because of the O-line and DB situation, the way it looked in weeks 1-4.  Since then, we have gotten some consistency, but I'm not ready to give Gettleman credit for that.  However, if we do beat ATL and we get to 5-3 for the first half of the season, I think the grade would bump up to an A-.

I know the GM isn't directly involved in game planning, but if we get to 5-3 and stay in the heat of that wildcard race, I think Gettleman gets a lot of the credit.  I won't go into listing all of the moves he made that are upgrades (it has already been done in this thread to great effect).  However, I will remind of a few players that are absolute keepers:

Mitchell

Wharton

Star

Short

Ginn

White

Just to name a few.  Gettleman didn't just find role players to fill spots temporarily.  He found actual starter caliber players (in draft and FA) that have raised the level of play for the whole team.

I don't understand those that are complaining about Hixon. He is our 4th receiver. It's rather hard to put up stats from the bench.

Hixon is insurance in case LaFell goes down. I hope we never have to use him much, but it's still early in the season and we may be glad we have him before it's all over.

I think part of the complaining about Hixon is more about the receiving core as a whole.

As it stands one might argue that this team lacks a stand out #1 receiver, we've got Smitty but no move has been made to get a guy that could take pressure off him. The issue then is LaFell and Ginn being the next two receivers up. Granted Ginn has done better than most expected, but he still drops at key moments; and LaFell still hasn't proven he can be consistent enough to be a legit #2 receiver, at best he's more suited to being a #3 or #4.

So as a whole the receiving core is still a position of 'weakness', or perhaps being more positive - a work in progress. By no means did I expect Gettleman to sort everything out in year one. I personally think he has done ok in terms of the receiving core. But part of the complaining is less about Hixon, and more about what some still see as an area where this team needs a new star to come in and help Cam. If a new star is found to become the new #1, then Smitty slotting in at #2, with LaFell and Ginn at #3 and #4, and Hixon at #5 would make the receiving core look a whole lot more positive, and in turn I think there would be less complaining.

Overall I think Gettleman has done a good job so far, and I think he has shown signs that he could be the right guy to hopefully put the touches in place to build a legit contender. I'd say his grade would be a B+ or A-

I agree that the issue is the receiving corps as a whole. Had Ginn not produced more than expected, we might be in deep trouble right now.

I've been calling for us to upgrade that position since training camp of 2010. It's amazing that it's now more than 3 years later, and we still haven't done anything significant. That said, at least Ginn and probably Hixon too, are much, much better than Legatron and Murphy.

Also worth noting that the alternative was Armanti Edwards. I'd call that a win.

Can't help but wonder if the folks complaining that everything wasn't fixed in one season grasp just how truly bad this roster really was before.

(that previously posted list of changes ought to help illustrate)
