What grade does Dave Gettleman get...

an example would be.....

he entered this season with an OL weak at many spots with virtually no depth.....we have a lot of football left.  That gamble still has a lot of football left to show it wasn't a poor decision.

we only have 4 wins at the moment.  Lot of football left and legit competition coming up.

And the obvious counterpoint  to that would be that having depth at certain positions just for depth's sake is overrated.

It is better to show that you have a good understanding of value over replacement at certain positions. Something Hurney clearly didn't get.

and I would ask what that has to do with our OL situation?  B/c that wouldn't be the case

we have backups as starters and virtually no depth.  playing w/ fire at OL....not so much elsewhere to a comparable degree.

It has shown that you can have an average to maybe even above average OL with street type FA OG (every team in the league is a couple of OT injuries away from huge issues)

Also shown that you can have a good to elite defense with street type FA secondary

Both are very welcome signs to a franchise that saw huge contracts to RBs in recent years, when the RB position was perhaps the lowest of all values in terms of replacement level.

like I said....lot of football left.

Better competition remains.  Part of the reason we went on our late run last year and our current one is the competition we are facing.

Let it show all that when we face the 49ers, Jets, Saints, etc is what I am saying

About 75% of the league is 'playing with fire' with their OL depth.. Just look at the Seahawks last week...

Agree to disagree then. Would not change much for me.

using the old Parcells analogy...

lets say a bad restaurant with the same bad chef starts getting a few good groceries from a new supplier while depleting old food stock. Food gets better but still bad. The new supplier doesn't deserve criticism IMO.

Its a little early to be grading him on 1 off season and 1/2 a season.  He has done a great job with the cap so far but its kind of like somebody was trying to say Austin is awful after 1/2 of his rookie season.  Still to early in my opinion.  If I was a pirate I would give him an R.

The one phrase that I think can be pretty accurately applied to Gettleman's approach so far is "a lot for a little".

One year removed from a situation so bad that it cost the GM - who previously had ringing endorsements from the owner - his job, we are both a better team and in far better salary cap shape.

I might have been able to buy that we could do one of those two, but both is a surprise.

A!

Alot of you were giving him poo for not getting OL, Wr, CB. Well it happens he snagged the positions we needed tbis past draft where the talent was deep. He left the other holes to fill for this upcoming draft, where that particular position is deep.

Common sense? What?

And the way he handled hurneys crap is amazing.
