14. Star Lotulelei, DT, Carolina Panthers
Grade: +11.1
Snaps: 270
Analysis: Arguably the form rookie right now with his work against the run standing out as much as any other. It’s not just that he’s clogging up running lanes, but he has a real knack for getting off the ball as his 12.5 Run Stop Percentage shows. That’s fourth best of all defensive tackles.

44. Kawann Short, DT, Carolina Panthers
Grade: +2.7
Snaps: 258
Analysis: When you start looking at how the Panthers’ defense has turned around, it starts with their top two picks. Star Lotulelei is rightfully getting most of the praise, but Short has certainly contributed as a backup tackle who can add some penetration in their nickel defense.

Sheldon is putting up stats, but we got Star not to be a stat machine, but to be a guy who could disrupt a team's running game. And obviously it's working. To really measure Star's value, I think you have to look at the difference in team rushing defense stats from last year to this year. And as a bonus, he's been pretty effectively collapsing pockets and drawing double teams to allow our ends and secondary to feast on opposing QBs.

Yep, dang gooden, sure glad he fell to us.  Had write up on impact rookies so far and he ranked 5th.

Last Week: No. 7

The Carolina Panthers have been in need of a difference-maker at the defensive tackle position for years, and it appears they found exactly what they needed by drafting Star Lotulelei with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

Lotulelei has been a major presence in the middle of the Carolina defense, especially against the run. He has 20 total tackles and four tackles for loss, and he has the third-best cumulative PFF rating against the run among NFL defensive tackles this season.

He has also been a solid pass-rusher with one sack and 10 total quarterback pressures through his first seven games.

Lotulelei has played less than 60 percent of the Panthers’ defensive snaps this season, but all in all, the 6’2”, 315-pound, powerful and explosive nose tackle has been the difference-maker the Panthers thought they were drafting.

The ecstacy of draft night 2013 was one of the best nights of my football fandom, and the buzz will not wear off any time soon.  I never will forget the thread from saints report when they couldn't believe Star might fall to THEM (HA!, fat chance suckers), then enjoying their meltdown/depression with what transpired.  I love it.
