Zac Stacy is an example of how poorly managed our Rb contracts are.

It's not a matter to talent. It's a matter of paying your RBs a combined like 17$mil in cap space. It doesn't work in the NFL anymore. Sure, I would rather have someone as talented as Stewart. But not at that price.

Fair enough. But its easy to say you don't want need Stu when he's standing on the sideline and the other guys are healthy.

How did we feel about 34 and 28 in 2009 when they had over 1000 yards apiece.

There are many ways to spend your cap. 34 and 28 were bargains for years. Today we are paying them. Today we are 4-3.

We are a winning team in the NFL, we run more than pass, it still works only Tolbert is our #2 at a much more manageable 2 mill a year.

I agree paying both wasn't the most prudent considering we are doing it with only 1 of them. Add in Tolbert and Cam and Hurney didn't have the best foresight.

The NFL is a funny game, just look at Beason and Davis , who'd have honestly thought Davis would be here longer than Beason. We made massive gambles with huge contracts at that position too. Wiser decision with the cap can be made throughout the squad. Does anyone not think Gman would have done a more favorable contract than the one Hurney gave CJ.

I really think that Cam's play is the biggest factor. His numbers for rushing TD's inside the 10 are better than most RBs in the league... much less QB's. With that kind of production... SOMEBODY gotta go. I think D-Will and J-Stew are equally talented. (since Jonathan has been injury prone, Im guessing he's the guy to go. It saves money and we could actually get some good value for him.)

All Im saying is that its easy to look back and say we didnt need that many RB's... but that was before we drafted Cam. Cam changes the offense THAT much.

Its also important to note that a part of the big reason for the productivity that we've gotten out of the smash and dash team is that they have each other splitting reps. It has been good for our running game to have a fresh RB who is just as talented as the guy who just finished breaking off a 10 yard run.

the entire position is becoming less and less scarce as a first round talent as more and more teams go for the multi back system.

Backs not from the first in the past 5 years:

Eddie Lacy - 2nd round

Shady McCoy - 2nd round

Alf Mo- 6th round

Stevan Ridley -3rd

Leveon Bell - 2nd

DeMarco Murray - 3rd

Arian Foster Undrafted

Lamar Miller - 4th

Andre Ellington - 6th

Gio Bernard - 2nd

RB's picked in the first round in the past 5 years:

CJ Spiller - sucks this year

Ryan Mathews - sucks and always broken

Trent Richardson- sucks

Mark Ingram - sucks

doug martin - sucks this year

david wilson - sucks

Jahvid Best - Broken

Knowshon Moreno - Good this year only

Donald Brown - sucks

Chris Wells - sucks and no longer on a team

With the amount of punishment they take, it doesn't make sense to take a flyer on a RB that early unless you know that they will be adrian peterson or Barry sanders reborn. There has been plenty of RB talent in later parts of the draft over the past 5 years, hell there wasn't a RB taken in the first round this past year. The position is being devalued and it makes sense with the direction the league is going.

Yeah, I don't know. I think its more about valuing/scouting RB's properly.

I mean you still see supposed Blue Chippers get drafted in the top 10 like Bush, AP, McFadden, TR the last few years. Even some years that a guy didn't go that high there were still multiple 1st rounders selected like in 2009 with Moreno (12th), Brown and Wells and in 2010 with Spiller (9th), Mathews (12th) and Best. Some years to talent just isn't there like in 2011 with Ingram the only 1st rounder.

Some of those recent 2nd rounders I did consider 1st round talent like McCoy, Lacy and Bernard so I guess there has been some perceived decrease in value as of late.

Spiller is the only back to have over 100 yards rushing on us this year, he has been plagued by injury. Matthews is playing well for SD, he had over 1000 yards in 2011 too. Injuries have hurt him but he isn't that bad.

Cripes man, Martin had like 1600 yards last year, that cat is talented, his TEAM is underperforming.

I don't like all this Barner bashing/ Ellington love either. Had we drafted him he'd be seeing the same number of snaps Barner has. We'd still have a stable of horses in front of him. He had toe surgery, give the lad a chance.

So how many rushing TDs does St Louis have on the year?

0

If every running back was as good as Tolbert and Williams then this might be a valid point but they aren't. How many games has Barner played this year? How many games has Armond Smith, or any other back we have drafted in the last 3 years? If they are a dime a dozen then why don't we have their replacement on the roster already? And if they are why are they getting no touches.

Technically, our RBs have one more TD than the Rams RBs

2005 in Seattle  you all would have given your left nuts to have a second highly paid good running back..............

and to quote myself haha    if we had the 3 big contracted backs we have now on that 2005 team we probably already have a superbowl championship  under our belts  even if the 2 outta 3 went down....  hoover started like 3 or 4 games at tailback that year.  Goings got a ton of carries as well after hoover went down......... then Seattle game goings went down and I honestly with out looking it up have no clue who that pitiful back was  trying to carry the load after the first quarter of that game.  I think he was a scat back and reminded me a lot of Jamal Robertson.

I agree with the premise that we shouldn't be paying 2 backs top dollar but I still have nightmares about us using our 6th or 7th back of the year........ *Shudders*  Maybe Hurney never wanted to be there again as well.

LOL, probably because it was Jamal Robertson. He was only active for 6 games that year, primarily used only as a returner but we had to turn to him against Seattle.

He had 4 carries that day. We had 12 total, 3 from Jake.

We lost Davis, Foster and Goings on the big day to a concussion. All they had to do was shut Smitty down.

St Louis has 0 rushing touch downs Panthers have 7.

Williams has 1, Tolbert has 3, and Newton has 3.

Don't know where you get your numbers.

I said....technically, our RBs only have 1 more TD than the Rams RBs.

Technically the Rams RBs have 0

Technically our RBs have 1

Our QB and FB have all our rushing TDs but 1. We have two RBs paid featured RB money....this thread was about bad RB contracts being poorly managed (not Cam and Tolbert rushing)

When I said technically, it was to imply I was going to speak on a technicality.
