(Edited) Rivera is only under contract through next year

nope.

10 wins and/or playoffs.

if he does that, extend him for another year and see if he can get back to back winning seasons. if he can't cut him lose. if he can, then give him and extension.

as good as things are looking right now, final results are all that matter and there's a whole lot of football left.

this only makes sense if you live in a vacuum.  Your front office will have a perception problem around the league with other coaches if a guy takes a 2-14 team to a 10-6 team and you don't extend him.

Plus, if you did that, he could do like Fox and be more worried about securing future employment and security that we aren't providing him with, that he doesn't really coach our team for that year.

In my opinion, and you can disagree, is that more bad than good would come of that.

10 wins and/or playoffs for me as well.  I have seen improvement each and every year, and if he is able to attain 10 wins, then he deserves a new contract.  The players respect him, and play hard for him.. they believe in his system, and he has not lost the locker room.  This team is on the rise.

Well said.  This is where my head is as well.

I've enjoyed seeing him change, but to me there are still quite a bit of questions to be answered.  I need to see how he coaches in a close game with the game on the line.  We know he can finish a season strong when there is nothing to play for, this year he needs to finish he season strong, when there is everything to play for.

Even if it is a 4 year deal, after this season we will probably have to make a decision to fire him or extend him.

We don't want another lame duck year for our coach. And if you want to hire a decent coach in the future you need to treat your current coach right.

If we were to go 10-6 and fire him, there will be a lot of coaches thinking, "Damn, he took a 2-14 team to10-6 in just three years and fired him (or didn't extend him). Why would I work for an organization like that?"

You guys might think that is silly, but coaches are a tight knit group. And they notice and talk about things like that.

So, in my opinion, at the end of the season we need to fire him or extend him. No lame duck situation.

Why would we have to extend him? Letting him work out the remainder of his contract is not a lame duck situation. If anything, he would be still be trying to earn an extension.

I'll add this to hopefully make it worth discussing...

Can you see a Lovie Smith scenario where Rivera makes the playoffs but still winds up fired?

The situation is a little different.  Rivera took over a 2-14 team just two seasons ago.

Absolutely.  Gettleman inherited Rivera, but I doubt he was told that he would have to keep him no matter what.  He may have his own guy in mind for the job.

We need a playoff appearance this season, that's the bare minimum.

My main concern right now is that Rivera still hasn't proven that he can win close games. Yeah we've won blowouts, but that hasn't been his weakness. I've definitely seen a change in him, but I want to be sure that that change and new mindset from him is here to stay.

I hope it works out with Ron, I like him, but there is still much to prove. These next 3 games will be a huge test.

For two reasons, future coaches don't want to work for and organization that doesn't take care of coaches that have success.  Sure we would probably still be able to get some coordinator somewhere, but coaches will talk to Rivera and to each other about the Panthers.

Think about it like this, if a salesperson took over the worst territory in your company and made it a good territory, and then the boss fired him, if you had a stable territory already would you want to work under the boss and take the territory of a guy that just got fired despite growing the territory from the worst in the company?  I think I would stay where I was with my current boss until a better opportunity arose.

Secondly, if a coach isn't getting security from his organization, he may be more worried about securing his next job, rather than doing his current job, wasting yet another year.
