(Edited) Rivera is only under contract through next year

10 wins and/or playoffs for me as well.  I have seen improvement each and every year, and if he is able to attain 10 wins, then he deserves a new contract.  The players respect him, and play hard for him.. they believe in his system, and he has not lost the locker room.  This team is on the rise.

...beyond this year.

He signed a three-year deal prior to the 2011 season. This is year three of that deal.

As it was with John Fox, if the Panthers decide it's time to move on they don't actually have to fire him. They can just decline to re-sign him.

If, however, they do want him to stay, they have to offer him a contract extension.

So, in your eyes, has Rivera done enough to earn such an extension?

I can't really see JR thinking seriously about what to do until the offseason. There's no point.

Even if it is a 4 year deal, after this season we will probably have to make a decision to fire him or extend him.

We don't want another lame duck year for our coach. And if you want to hire a decent coach in the future you need to treat your current coach right.

If we were to go 10-6 and fire him, there will be a lot of coaches thinking, "Damn, he took a 2-14 team to10-6 in just three years and fired him (or didn't extend him). Why would I work for an organization like that?"

You guys might think that is silly, but coaches are a tight knit group. And they notice and talk about things like that.

So, in my opinion, at the end of the season we need to fire him or extend him. No lame duck situation.

nope.

10 wins and/or playoffs.

if he does that, extend him for another year and see if he can get back to back winning seasons. if he can't cut him lose. if he can, then give him and extension.

as good as things are looking right now, final results are all that matter and there's a whole lot of football left.

Exactly
