We don't play man because it's not our scheme. We play a Jim Johnson 4-3 defense. Which is an aggressive zone blitzing scheme. Sure we may match up a 1 on 1 periodically depending on a particular blitz package (think safety blitzes where the normal over the top help on a "cover 2" is blitzing), but in general we are a zone defense.

changing what we do to fit one player, even if it is frikkin asomugha, would be a mistake.

 

it would be a fundamental change in philosophy that would change a lot about what we do.

 

better solution? do what we do better with who we have and then in the offseason find guys who fit it better.

 

btw...having a shutdown corner is overrated. sure, it's nice to be able to shut down the number one or two WR, but that just means a QB is going to take advantage of other options. it's just not the big deal it once was because teams are spreading the ball out to more receivers and doing it more often.
