Chris Harris (ESPN): "Cam Newton is good. His receivers aren't"

top dawg

Ginns drop was a potential TD but has he dropped many others? I thought he's been playing pretty well... And that drop last night was on his hands but by no means an easy catch...

He's dropped 1 pass and it was against the Bucs. Technically, I'm not sure if that will go as a drop considering it never hit his hands.

I do find it fascinating that someone's brain can process his speed, plus the ball speed, locate and catch without missing a step.

Personally, I forgive him because he turned that drag into 35 yards. Any other receive is down after 13.

IMO, a lot of things these folks say are quite subjective and needs to be placed in context with both the team and players.

There is a reason why some teams, when they get a new QB, go out and get a fresh bunch of Receivers or keep the Receivers they know is mature and can work well with many of the younger QBs. The psychological relationship between a QB and his Receivers is so imortant. That is why those in the media are always talking about the Go To receiver for their choosen QBs.  If it's a Vet QB, you keep hearing that they have to "bringing the Receivers along. It the QB is young, it's gelling or building a good relationship. They understand that football isn't just a physical game, it's also quite psychological.

Let's face it, the most important relationship on a team is a QB/Reciver relationship. The question is, who is Cam's strongest Go To Receiver. It cannot just be Smitty. A young QB has to be secure in knowing when he throws a ball his receivers will get it. If they keep dropping it or does so at pivitol times in the game, that does play on the QB's security and trust. If he's forced to throw to a Reciever who is a beloved Vet but that Reciever is getting old and cannot get open enough to catch the balls, but fans believe the QB should throw to him anyway, that is a problem.

I think Cam just needs two really strong Recievers that he trusts to throw too, outside of Smitty. Let's be real, the majority of Ints Cam has was on the Receivers more than him.

I am fine with Ginn in his role. Has good repoir with Cam.

I grade overall our receiver group as C+ or B- at best. Just a fact. Add a gamebreaker in the first round next year, and it could move close to an 'A'

To move this core to an a I think we would need to add a wr and possibly a te. Jist not enuff weapons. A true number 2 wr is a guy who can go off for 100 yards any given night when the d focuses to much on your number one. Lafell can't have morr than 3 100 yard gms in his career. Olsen is closer to a wr than te in my opinion.

Obviously Harris isn't looking at the targets and drops stats or he would know what we are all saying.  Ginn has not really dropped any passes before Thursday and Smith has dropped the most.  LaFell is inconsistent at best and likely is not a real number 2 this year but as others have said, Ginn really has been.

It is an area where the receivers need to tighten up though and it a legitimate concern.  But I wouldn't call them bad by any stretch.

Ginn and Lafell have both become labeled with the dropsies. Stats show that Lafell has been very reliable over his entire career and Ginn has one drop which was a huge bomb.

Tavon Austin averages one drop per game in comparison.

I don't think it is either/ or. The truth is our receivers are pretty much just average. That even goes for Smitty these days :( as he gets older

They don't suck, but they also aren't bailing Cam out, or making incredible individual plays after the catch.

They are just, meh. Not bad but not good.

Well, like I said the other night: It's not the drops that kill me, per se, it's dropping passes at key times.  We got away with a couple against an awful team. Couldn't absorb the drops so well against the likes of the Cardinals or Seahawks (which really ended with a fumble, but "What if...?").

I've definitely seen Lafell drop more than Ginn, but neither is a HUGE problem.  Lafell dropped that 3rd down conversion in the game that Smitty had his bad drops...

As I said last night, I don't recall seeing Ginn drop one before this week...

People just want to find something to complain about I guess.
