Cam's Contract if the season ended today

Recommended Posts

It's not that hard.

If you think he is going to be your franchise QB, you pay him now to save.

If you don't think he's going to be your franchise QB then you can...

A. Roll with him for now because he's good enough and doesn't break the back.

B. Look for your franchise QB and deal him for picks.

If you want to wait to see if he's a franchise QB, then fine, but be prepared to pay him more than he's worth because another team will.

You're not paying him what he's worth on the field really.  You're paying him based on what another team will give him, if you want to keep him.  That's what happened to Flacco.  He went on a great run to help win a Superbowl but nobody thinks he's worth more than Brees, Manning, or Brady even though he makes more.

Take a chance, pay early, save money.

Wait to be sure, pay late, overpay.

This is why Gettlemen gets a paycheck.  There is enough evidence to decide right now if you're going to go into the next 5 years with Cam as your franchise QB.

If you wait until he proves it like everyone says, that makes it hard to pay for other talented players.

There is also a piece of the puzzle that I think people are missing.  Since the new CBA you don't have to pay your 1st round picks a mint.  That is money Cam agent will expect to be paid now.  So, really think of the 70 million we'll pay him in a fair deal and put another 30-50 that we would have been paying him over the old CBA deal for a 1st round pick.

Here is the deal if you think Cam is a franchise elite player you are looking at 6 years/120 million.  Is he worth that?   You pay him that and he is not you are pretty much stuck with him.  Im not saying Cam cant be I'm saying you wait til he has a winning season/ win some more games.

But there are about 26 other franchises who would cut their nuts off to be "stuck with" Cam Newton, and I don't think I'm just being a homer saying that.

But are you willing to pay him 6years/120 million because that is close to what it is going to cost.

With that he will be eating up close to 20 million in cap space.

Honestly Gettlemen is setting us up nicely to get the deal done.  But if I was Gettlemen I wouldn't do it until the team either has a winning season or wins a playoff game.  We can be patient with Cam.

If you wait and next year allow RG3, Luck, and Wilson set the market you will be probably paying more than extending him this off season.

Cam is the first to come up after new CBA. You have a chance to get something done actually cheaper than waiting.

He is the guy. You need to show your commitment to him as a franchise. Waiting sends mixed messages.

If you wait and he walks, the next QBs agent may tell him to pull an Elway/Eli because you don't want to pay record setting QBs on their second contract.

There is nothing but bad if you wait. Even if Cam never gets any better you can win with him as is. Make the commitment.

Starting with the NFC east and moving west.

Eli Manning

Romo

Brady

Matt Ryan

Drew Brees

Flacco

Roethlisberger

Rivers

Rodgers

Peyton Manning

Which you could argue that Romo and Rivers isnt. But the rest have playoff experience. Cam hasnt even had a winning season.

I agree with that list minus rivers and add cam.

Let's see first Qb ever with 50 Ptd and 25 rtd in a three season span, one of the fastest qb's ever to 10k yards and 50 td's. One of the fastest players in nfl history to hit 75 total td's.

I think he's proven that he's an elite level qb and deserves the money.

bu bu but we have to keep Hardy, Ginn, Lafell Lmfaooo.

Cam will get paid big bucks hate it or love it remember what Richardson said about him being his last QB or something along those lines. When Richardson loves you your good no matter what just ask Jake and Smitty (more so the fights not performance obviously)

Dash, i respect your opinion and think your 2 cents is worth more than most but youre bat poo crazy wrong about Cam.

To clarify,

I love Cam

Tons of potential

Already a solid-good QB (most of the time)

There are only a very small handful of QB's id trade him for

Maybe I am being a bit to harsh in my definition of a franchise QB and slightly grouping it with an elite QB.

I am a bit of a perfectionist at times, so prying myself from elite and franchise, I guess I can say Cam is a franchise QB. If by franchise you mean as a base solely a guy that when all the other pieces are right (team, coaching, play calling etc) can lead you to wins or not lose the game for you.

Cam is much more than the above and well on his way to becoming a great QB.

He's not an elite QB (yet) but he is a francise QB....

I define a francise QB simply buy this: if we were to get the 1st pick in the draft would we draft a QB. The answer to that, I believe, is a no.

Lets say the kid from FSU goes undefeated and beats Bama in the national title, then returns to school and goes undefeated again improving his already un godly stats.

The ONLY way I dont draft him is if I already have an elite QB ie Brady, Manning, Rodgers, or Brees.

Not saying id start him, but having him and Cam one of them are bound to be great.

Fug, then again a team would be ready to sell the entire farm to get him so I would prob have to accept that. But straight up no trades I am taking the FSU QB number 1 in the draft.

Can trade him during the season or next off season if need be.

A franchise qb isn't the same as an elite qb. I think that's where some of you are confused. A newly drafted rookie can be considered a franchise qb.

Quarterbacks like Manning and Brady aren't franchise qbs because their careers are coming to an end. A franchise qb is a young qb that a team will like to build around for the future.
