Shula: Finally getting it?

top dawg

I will defer to your thought process, in general, because you have re-watched the games, but I remember some bad play calls (like unnecessarily running the Wild Cat), and running D-will (or Tolbert) into the middle of a pile repetitively. And let's not forget the god-awfully slow developing read option that was reminiscent of the first part last year (granted, this may have been solely Cam's problem, but I doubt it).

I know it seems like the play is god awful.. but the pile they run into shouldn't be 3 yards in the backfield.  Our run blocking especially early the last 3 years is mind numbingly bad sometimes.  I watched some games from last year and I don't blame Chud as much anymore.  Everyone says our team plays off Cam but the Oline is a huge part of that.

The same wildcat got 6 yards , 5 and 7 yards respectively in other games.

The safety on Tolbert last week wasn't play calling fault.  Bad blocking.

2 out of the 3 INT's in the arizona game had wide open underneath receivers.

4 of the 7 sacks in the AZ game were from the same blitz and each time the RB failed to even look inside.

I've really like the way he mixed it up the last few games, but I want to see how well he does in a game where we're not just cruising.  I want to see how well he reacts when we need to win a shootout because despite how well our D has been playing, when we play the Saints, we're gonna have to trade some scoring drives with them, not just eat clock and be willing to settle for a punt.

Cam is looking off receivers, and not locking on to only Smitty and Olson. Also they are using a great deal of the entire playbook. 9 different receivers last night and 3 rushing TDs. Shula is working much more closely and spending more time in the film room with Cam. Even on the sidelines Can is looking at formations. These things have brought him around in his game.

Being too competitive can be a downfall for a quarterback, honestly.

You wind up always looking for the home run rather than just methodically taking the steps that can get you to paydirt.

Jake had that issue.  Not really sure the coaches ever got it worked out of him.  Maybe they're having more success with Newton on that front.

The Shula criticism comes from the impulsive over reactions by fans who want to buy success.

Rivera may have made some terrific decisions about retaining hi s staff.  Sometimes new and change does not result in better results. Shula knows Cam, they system, the players, etc.  That takes time.  Rivera did not have time.

That is players.

Shula called a a comparable game against Seattle as his recent praised ones. Fans were just in shock we weren't attempting bombs all game.

Fans asked for the Bills debacle......Shula/Cam simply weren't back to the Seattle game model and we are rolling

I actually think the gameplan itself was good against the Bills.  They have a very good defensive front agaisnt the run and were without their top 2 DB's.  With that, you try and exploit the passing game.

Problem was that we just were out of synch and did not execute very well.

Good points.  This is not a bunch of thoroughbreds up there. Kalil and Gross are solid, but the others are weak to average. Cam's running ability helps neutralize the defense some.  Bell is below average at RT.  He would be a great backup, able to play both sides of the line adequately.  Scott is a liability vs the pass but he is better than Hangarter was.  Wharton is pretty good at times, but he seems to have lost a step pulling.  He gets to the hole a bit late.  Nobody is good at picking up the blitz.  Gross and Kalil are solid, but they rarely blitz there.  They blitz Bell and Scott, trying to force Newton to his LEFT--where it is harder to throw on the run.

I've been skeptical of Shula as an offensive coordinator. But as of recently he's been doing a good job. But he's gotta continue on this trend. And I will give the offense a pass to some degree because we still have some positions that need to be filled through the draft and free agency.

30+ points not good enough?  Panthers lead the league in TD drives of 10 plays or more.  That is damn good offensive football!!

There's a difference of wanting to see the offense open up more and scoring 30+ points. I never questioned if we could score 30 a game or not!!!!!!!!

Shula has been calling plays good enough to win in the regular season. If we do make the Playoffs, Shula will have to open things up for us to have any chance of getting out the 1st round!!!!!!!

I expect more under Shula's sleeve. I believe he's just getting started. This is still some very "conservative" play calling from him!!!!!

For McD, I want both him and Rivera to have more trust in our secondary. Let them try and make plays. Send more 5-6 guys after the QBs instead of relying on just our front four!!!!!

Know what you're talking about first before "!!!!!!!!!" someone.
