At 4-3 the Panthers could move to the next level with a trade.

Both players scare me a little.  Gordon is one more strike against the substance abuse policy from a lengthy suspension and Nicks has battled constant nagging injuries.  But, then again, when talking about players of their caliber, there's zero chance of them being available for trade if there's no question marks.

I really would like to see a move to get a true starting caliber WR in here though if the opportunity presents itself.  We just have to accept that LaFell is never going to be a dependable #2 WR.  Everytime he has a game where we think he's going to finally breakout, he'll follow that up with a multiple drop game.  I don't think he'll be re-signed unless it's on the cheap.  Ginn is a good piece to have, but I prefer him as a #3.  He's inconsistent with his hands as well, but the only drops we've seen from him have been in heavy traffic.  He's great with those drag routes and other short routes to get him the ball in space and to blow the top off the coverage with fly routes.  He's also shown the ability to go across the middle for us, which was a huge knock on him previously in his career.  Smitty is in his mid-30s now and we still don't have another starting WR.

He had 3 drops all of last year and a drop rate of 4% which is one of the best in the league.

In 2011 he had 2 drops with a rate of 3.6%

This year he has 1 with a drop rate of 3% coming into last night.

A lot of them have been key drops and/or wide open drops.  I'm not one of the LaFell haters by any means, but I don't understand your constant defense of everything LaFell.  What has he done to earn that?  And anyone only crediting him with one drop this season hasn't been watching the games.

IMO, he's done nothing to show that he's anything more than a sub package WR.  I'm not saying that we should run him out of town, but G-man is crazy if he gives him #2 WR money.  If someone else is willing to give him that, then we should wish him the best and move on.  He's not a #2 WR.  I think there's a reason why there's been little to no talk about contract negotiations with LaFell.  They're simply not happening.

I'm stating facts based on stats.

Can you name all these the multiple drop games he has had? Based on the math he has had at most 2 in three years and I frankly don't remember any.

Overall he has great hands.

He dropped at least two last night.

Again, I'm not saying we should run him out of town, but we should definitely stop pretending that he's a viable #2 NFL WR.  And again, anyone who has only counted 1 drop this season isn't watching Panthers games.  LaFell's own mom would've counted more than 1 drop.

You are basically fabricating stats out of thin air.

The only issue I can see with trading for a receiver is that there would be immense pressure to: a - learn the scheme, and b - build chemistry with Cam. Now perhaps a receiver like Nicks or Gordon could slot straight in, but to be honest, Cam seems to be doing well and building strong bonds with the current crop. So maybe the team should wait until off season and either draft a new #1 receiver or sign one in free agency/via a trade.

I wouldn't complain if we do get a new weapon for Cam this season, but it would have to be the right guy that could come in and be that guy for the long term. Nicks or Gordon might fit that, and if the deal is right then perhaps Gettleman will go for it. Personally I don't see any movement happening though, I think Gettleman will draft Cam's big time weapon.
