Our New Identity as a Dink n' Dunk Offense

Can we all agree that Shula is doing a pretty good job with the play calling now. We're scoring and using up clock and not turning it over much. Glad to see him doing a great job.

I don't like the game manager tag either. Cam won that game, he didn't get out of the way. He made plays in the passing game and with his legs. His numbers aren't flashy because we can eat up 9 minutes of clock on a scoring drive but 31 points is not  game managing.

There was a point in one drive which it looked like we wouldn't finish the drive.  Cam took over at the right time and got the first down then the touchdown.  That was what was needed and he stepped up to the task.

Please.  Even the coaches acknowledged a change after Seattle, and it clearly didn't work.  I don't care if the players claim the same game plan and calls were used vs Buffalo as vs Seattle, they are wrong.

Each game is different based on who we are facing and what they bring to the table.  So if that is your criteria, we called different gameplans every week.  And will for every game going forward.  But if the notion is that the difference is primarily Shula then I would disagree.  You could make an argument that as the year has gone on he is getting better given he hadn't called a game in years and was rusty.  But I don't think we changed the playbook, we are just finding what cam does better and calling more of those plays.  If as cam stated they are just tailoring the plan to his strengths and his likes, then there will be continual tweaking of the gameplan each week. But all teams do that and it isn't considering a change in plans.

It has just as much merit your opinion, it's just opposite. :)

I am basing my opinion on what cam said not my own speculation.  You could make a case though that with experience and tailoring things to Cam's strengths, and for example Tolbert coming on in a big way, we are having more success but I don't think we are changing the plays or doing something different so much as watching film and doing more of what is working.

How the hell are you a Vick fan?? You hate dogs and the Panthers? Oh wait...you must he a fan of the Chokies.

I love dogs.  I have no kids yet so my two dogs are spoiled.  However, if you want to get into that conversation about society, morality, and dog fighting it would be a conversation better served in the tinderbox.

From a football fan perspective I think he is one of the most exciting players on the field every Sunday, so I enjoy watching him play.

I think part of that is us learning how to react versus the blitz. It takes less time for a received to run six hards and then around than it does to run ten yards and then around. With all of the blitzes Cam has been seeing it makes sense he would be checking down to the hot route a bit more. As long as we take a couple of shots deep when we have time I am good with this offense.

Yeah, its not dink and dunk, its just efficient. Its the same thing all of the greats do. It also assists the run game and acts as a substitute for the run in many instances, while keeping the offense moving without the risk of losing yards - quick drops, quick passes.

Furthermore, it sucks the defense up and opens up the big play downfield... look how different Cam's stats would've looked last night if Ginn had caught that perfectly thrown bomb.

I was joking about the dogs. Still though, It's strange to run across a Ron Mexico fan on a Panthers message board.

And that sir is the major difference in this offense - imho.

Shula isn't reinventing the wheel. He's fine tuning it. And he's finding ways to get all of his weapons involved. Ron and company made a good decision bringing Shula back as the OC. It took a few games for him to figure it out, but I think he's on a roll right now.

Unlike Chud, Shula is getting more out of Cam, DWill, Tolbert, and the #3 WR. He's trying to figure out Barner, and I think he will get it soon. If not for that nasty toe nail injury, he probably would already have Barner making big plays too. His focus is not only on Cam, but every playmaker on the offense.

Who would have thunk it... Shula is a actually a great playcaller?! He is on the same page as his players, and Ron is letting him do his job with the occasional "go for it on 4th" order.

We haven't gone West Coast.  It's still a Coryell attack.

But I do think they've rather heavily emphasized to Newton that he should take what the defense gives him (and it's working).

And honestly, not a bad approach when you have speedy receivers like Smith and Ginn to whom you can throw it short and just watch them fly.
