Our New Identity as a Dink n' Dunk Offense

what it is, is smart football. it's smart game management that doesn't focus on just one aspect of the game, but rather spreads it out effectively and efficiently to several players consistently.

it keeps the defense honest and busy and it tires them out and keeps our defense off the field.

the thing that keeps this from being a typical dink and dunk offense is that cam isn't throwing "safe" high percentage passes. these are threading the needle throws. he's still taking risks, its just that they aren't all deep passes anymore and he's not turning the ball over.

i absolutely love how they are using him as a runner as well in designed runs and in giving him the freedom to exploit holes the defense gives him.

this is every bit the dangerous offense it was his first year, only it's more methodical and calculated and efficient. it reminds me of michael myers...you don't see the guy moving fast, but he'll still kill you. you'll run, you'll try to hide, but no matter what you do, he's gonna catch up to you. you'll look back and he'll be right there. you turn the corner and he'll be right there. you find a place you think is safe and he's right there. you don't know how he got there, but it doesn't matter because in the end the story is always the same....you're gonna die.

Was listening to Mike and Mike talking with Herm Edwards about the Panthers game on the radio this morning and Greenberg dropped what I found to be a very interesting stat.

During our 1-3 start, Cam's average pass attempt was for just over 10 yards, his completion percentage just teetered over 50% and he had 6 turnovers. During our 3-game winning streak (I got a little hard typing that) Cam's average pass attempt has gone down to just over 6 yards; and the result is a completion percentage over 70%, and zero turnovers in the winning stretch.

It's hard to imagine considering we have a QB with one of the strongest arms in the league, and two burners in Ginn and Smith, but it would seem that our offense has found its identity. We are a low-risk, clock-eating, dinkin' and dunkin' offense. And I'm surprisingly okay with it. Cam is getting touchdowns on the air and on the ground, we're putting up 30+ points per game, and we're over .500.

With the defense being as stellar as it is, I think this mentality could carry us to a playoff berth. Both Herm and Golic like us to grab the last wildcard slot (and with the shiz-wreck state of the NFC, I can totally see that happening).

I just hope the story doesn't turn into one of Cam being converted into a game manager because he is unreliable/gunslinger/too dumb for a down the field passing game.  What they are doing clearly works, and I hope they stick to it.

why do we worry what is said ??

Have you been watching AMC movies?

lol, no...I've seen it quite a few times, tho, and it's that time of the year. seems to fit. i mean they get the ball and next thing you know, the clock has run down 6-7 minutes. it's just crazy to me just how much time they have with the ball in their hands.

Yeah. We have had great drives. A couple 9+ minute drives.

That is why I don't worry as much about.pace in terms of getting off a bunch of snaps, i am more worried about effeciency and we have been very effecient the last three games.

yep. had my barbqued crow a couple weeks ago.

i was a big fan of the chip kely/gus malzahn hurry up no huddle offense and hated slow paced offense that ate up the clock because i thought it limited your chances of scoring, and i was really not a fan of shula style ball, but i have to admit i really like what they have been doing. it really helps, though, that they are going for it on fourth so much.

i still want to see us beat some good teams, though. and i am like everyone else who wants to see them win a close game. but i'm not complaining about how things are going. these. guys look good and are really winning back my confidence.

Don't know where they got their data from, but in the three game win streak Cam has attempted 75 passes and has 667 passing yards (with 6 passing TDs).

That's 8.9 yards per attempt, NOT "just over 6".

FWIW, I still think Chip Kelly can and will be successful if they build that roster around his offensive vision and get a better and more durable dual threat QB than Vick (which stings me to say because I am a Vick fan).

Also, it will take a year or two for the Eagles players to acclimate to the pace and run it well.  I really think he can win with that pace.

But I don't think there is a right or wrong answer about pace.  I just think whatever you do, do it well.  If you go fast and play like poo it may help you score more points, but it doesn't help you win more games.

I think they are talking about how far the ball is travelling in the air on pass attempts.
