this begs the question if you have known anybody who has dealt with addiction. what dude is gonna throw away his dream for a "temporary high" and not have a sickness?

Indeed I have.  And this particular person always talked about how they were a victim and it wasn't their fault, even after they nearly killed somebody while driving drunk.

Like I said, I don't care what you call it.  I care what they do about it.

Call it whatever you want.  A guy who's living his dream, making millions playing a kid's game, and is willing to risk it all for a temporary high is a guy whose brain is not hitting on all cylinders.

Call it stupidity, poor judgment, lack of wisdom, or whatever else you want, the result is the same.  A young guy screws up his life, his ability to make a living, the position of his family, and whatever else you wanna throw in.

All for a temporary high :(

could not have said it better Mr Scott. I have dealt with this for decades with someone very close to me and these stories come out and hit so close to home, that it turns my stomach. All these people responding to your comments negatively are the same group that cheered when Obama called dad's "heroes" for raising their own kids and not being a dead-beat. No, thats YOUR responsibility. It's what is expected of you, you're no "hero" for doing what you asked for/created. Same goes for Blackmon. Yes, he clearly is "addicted." So what? what does that mean? Should he just say "Fug it, im addicted so why fight it? I mine as well get high and enjoy it!" Is that what you want? Or no, how about he acts like a man for once in his life and does something about it. There are over 5,000 centers/organizations/and programs in this country he can get help in. And lord know's he has the resources (time/money/motivation) to do it. But he doesn't. For all the people saying Scott is wrong: keep calling it a "sickness" and placing the blame on something else as he risks the lives of innocent people every time he gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

tl/dr: Blackmon should stop acting like a little over privileged bitch and do what he is obligated to do. And those placing the blame on a "sickness" are pathetic.

1st step is labeling it something in order for the person to better deal with it. calling someone stupid for an addiction isn't helping them do something about it.

just because you knew one person that played the victim doesn't mean that everybody does. putting labels on things of this nature help people whether you realize it or not.

probably not as pathetic as someone who doesn't know what empathy feels like

way to stupid to even justify a response. keep coddling this self-absorbed pussy. im sure hes laying in bed right now, hardly able to move cuz you know, hes so "sick" and all. have you started a collection basket asking for donations to help him out yet? or you going to do that later?

I find it so fitting that literally as we speak, the Xtra-Life fundraiser is going on, helping SICK and brain damaged children in hospitals all over this country, hoping to raise over $5 Million just to go to the research to help these kids see their 8th birthday, And during this time, the "sickness" you want to talk about and defend on a message board, is someone who likes to go joy-riding after getting completely high/poo-faced. Keep it up. Youre really doing the lords work

you hit on something that is very personal for me. So ill tell that to my friends mother who through all his faults was a college graduate and got hooked on drugs while still going to school, who made a 1400+ on his SAT and got addicted to painkillers, went through rehab but eventually shot them up and died. ill tell her that he was just being stupid and didn't have a "sickness" because he was just being fuging stupid and should have pulled himself up from the depths of despair. and yes alcohol can have the same kinds of effects and affects on people because it can be an ADDICTION.

not everything is black and white. nobody is coddling justin blackmon. nobody is saying he shouldn't take responsibility for his actions. BUT some people are saying that he needs help because he has a disease, HE should make the choices to better and help himself. And spare the lords work bullshit, i've seen too many of my friends die because of addiction.  good, smart people. so fug you dude.

addiction is a sickness. he needs help with his addiction.it is up to him, to get medical attention for his problem. to say because he is not ill or laying in bed then he must not be sick is dumb.

Call it whatever you want. If you have a "sickness" you cure it. Simple as that. He has the money, time and motivation to do it, yet doesnt choose to. Stop sitting here, calling it a sickness, then just saying "oh well, moving on." No, clearly you must not do this, but I hold people accountable. you are responsible for your own life and stop with this bullshit "mental control" part. That's for weak pussies who can't handle the blame for their own actions. His "sickness" isn't cancer. His "sickness" was completely self-induced and risks the lives of innocent people every single day. He's known about this for at least 4 years and still doesn't take the necessary actions to be an adult and do whats best for both himself and others. For that reason, I have no respect/sympathy for him, and in the event something happens where he puts someones life in jeopardy, I just pray that it's his own.

And RumGone, I have no problems with you personally man, but dont use some sob story to try and "win an internet debate." I've had 2 family members and a close friend to my father take his own life to addictions. I know what it's like. Doesn't change the matter at hand, and doesn't make Blackmon's lack of responsibility any more or less sad/pathetic

I don't think what you label it means squat.

There are people that need help coping, there are people that need understanding, there are people that need a hand up, and there are people that need their ass kicked.  I've known examples of every type.  The one named earlier is the one I had the most dealings with.  he needed multiple kicks in the ass, but nobody was willing to say anything that might 'hurt his feelings'.

Not around him anymore.  Far as I know, nothing's changed.  For as long as I knew him, he continued to drink and drive - even with his grandchildren in the car - because he knew better than anyone "how much he could handle".

I seriously doubt telling him "you have a disease" would have made any difference.

Being rich is not a cure for addictions, depression, or mental disease just as it isnt a cure for cancer. Having money and fame is only going to make things more difficult for many people who struggle with such things. Empathy is the key word here. Ive lost quite a few friends over the years to addictions and depression.
