This is pathetic.

I think the flag was being pulled out because the other dude was about to roll up on the QB's knees, which is outside of the QB strike zone. Or, they were afraid of a high-low hit. It just happened that 47 then hit the QB.

Did they review the target, and was it upheld?

it wouldn't matter. people will continue to sue as long as there are long term injuries and effects from the game.

really the rule changes have always happened and time it happens people gripe about how it's killing football, but it never does and it won't.

it's just not that big of a deal in the whole scheme of thingsd, imo. in a few years no one will care about the targeting rule because the calling of it will back off, fans will have gotten used to it, players will have adapted, and people will be complaining about some other new rule.

the game has always changed and evolved for different reasons, usually for player safety and everyone gets used to it.

Nobody here is complaining that it is killing the game we are complaining that it is changing the game. Which is accurate.

but hey, if you have no problem with games being influenced by extracurricular factors such as crowd reaction or predetermination then by all means

Yes and yes. That was what was baffling, but the rule's so arbitrary it doesn't shock me.

except that he didn't have his flag out.  he pulls the flag out simultaneously with the contact.  he had his hand on his flag, which is tucked into his belt, anticipating a penalty, but the flag was still tucked.  he also didn't throw it until he had seen the play through.  fault the rule, not the refs actions.  flags get picked up all the time.  better to throw it, and then look at the play to get it right, then to let the next play happen and miss the chance.

there is a difficult path here, choosing between gladiator violence that brings in $$$ from the fans and player safety.

Which is exactly the problem I have overall. We see calls made like this weekly.

Litigation is the American way.....lawyers and lawsuits are the norm in all aspects of society.Unless they find some way to construct helmets to prevent head trauma then this game will be changing.Kickoffs are already being slowly phased out and defensive players are being handcuffed with all sorts of tackling and hitting rules. The game will be changing and it may be a combination of tackle football and flag football. You may think that this sounds ridiculous, but the NFL is all about profit.Lawsuits may force their hand.

it goes back to what i said, tho...the game has always been changing. this era is no different than any other era in that regard.

i just got used to it a long time ago that the nature of the game will cause it to have new rules brought in that will have a bigger impact early and then the impact will subside. this is no different.

yes, it is changing the game. it's changing an ever changing and evolving game. my advice...get used to it or quit watching because no public outcry is going to revert to the time before whatever new rule went into effect.

yeah, it's a bit ridiculous but most everyone will get used to it. as the season goes on we'll see less and less of that targeting rule called (since it's new and apparently a big deal to the ncaa, he refs are going to start seeing it everywhere, but that will change) and we may even see it change going into next year.

i don't know...i just don't see this as anything incredibly new or all that different from what has happened before. it doesn't make the game really less enjoyable for me. it's just something else to gripe about when it effects a team i like adversly and that i will celebrate when it's called on the other team.

you can pick a flag up, but you can't go back and flag something later.  Better to err on the side of throwing than not.  Hence the 'anticipation'.

what i would like to see is the ability to challenge penalties. when it's a BS call, the refs deserve to get called on it.

Thats just the way the world is its all driven by $$ and the greedy fugs wont stop until they milk this sport for all its worth

Safety rules my ass they just dont want to see their superstar qbs to get hurt or any other top tier player because thats money they lose

I also think former players are to blame as well since they just sued the nfl for 800 million for an injury settlement its like fuging seriously? You were a millionaire at one point its your fault you dont have any money left no poo youre going to have medical problems after playing this sport for years there has to be some sort of repercussion for playing a game as your job...

Now its only going to make the nfl become more pussified

It wasn't vicious, but it was a chippy "here I am" hit. It's pretty clear he could have pulled up and he didn't. Add the head contact and there you go. Crappy college refs are gonna call that.

really? he pulled up and it's clear as day to me.
