Ideal 1st Round Pick for Carolina [UPDATED]

Lol why is it every time there is a thread about a good WR prospect somebody says "Well I mean I'd rather have that really tall guy, really tall guys are just so awesome."

Tall lanky jumpball receivers are a dying breed. People prize talent over height instead, and given that most corners are under 6 foot, teams aren't seeing any drawbacks to it. There isn't a 6'4" wideout in the country who is more naturally talented than Watkins and anybody who would make a decision based on something so relatively insignificant to the total package is stuck in the past.

...and yet you were adamant about Alshon Jeffrey when he was coming out. SO much so that you dubbed him the best wr in college football. Who is known for only one thing. Jump balls. lol. Growl, dude...lol.

I am hopeful we go LT with our 1st pick in the draft and there should be a good one available when we pick. I personally like 6' 6" 310 lb, Alabama LT Cyrus  Kouandjio who ended the 2012 season ranked as the top offensive tackle from the 2011 draft class.[13

In my mind, there are two players you grab when you need one with the first pick if they are there and you need one--QB and LT.

However, if the top LTs are gone (there are  about 4 elite LTs-Lewan, Matthews, Kounandjo, and maybe Richardson), I am not for taking a second or third round talent in the first based on position played and need.  In this draft, however, there are some gems that are not ranked that high at this time.

James Hurst, UNC.  I think i would take him at the end of the first round, but some have him ranked in the 50-70 range.  I think he will rise--just on a bad team.

La'el Collins LSU  He is new at LT and was projected as a G, but he has protected the QB beautifully so far.

Cam Erving FSU  He is a bit raw because he (like our own Chandler) was a DT who converted. He has good athleticism.

After that, we are talking right tackles, which I would consider as well.

I am not so sure that Gross is done.  I think he will return for one more season if we make the playoffs.  I would also like to see Chandler play more.  They seem to be high on him and grooming him for the job.

Personally, right now, I think we are going CB in the draft.

I'm not saying gross is done at all he's a consistent pro bowler and one of my favorite all time panthers but I think it should be a priority to get him moved to the right side next season just to extend his career in whatever way possible....either through the draft or FA we MUST snag a good LT....that being said in a perfect world I'd love to have mike Evans from Texas a&am dude is a freak 6'5 225 and catches every thing thrown at him plus is great after the catch....he bails Johnny football out on a lot of poorly thrown balls.....but oline needs to be sured up protect cam at all costs

Depends on whether Gross would take RT money (if we were moving him to the right side).  No way you pay top LT money for a RT.

If Watkins is there, I don't see how we don't take him.

My order of need right now would be:

1. WR

2. OL

3. DB

4. OLB

Need playmaker at WR. OL is always a need for anyone, can always upgrade. Stud cornerback would be hard to pass on, but not over WR. And we really need an outside linebacker to take over for TD or Blackburn. AJ Klein may be an answer, but we still need a quality player here.

Nooooooooooo..... Ill flip if we spend our first pick on him. Yes he is fast and can make big plays... but thats once out of 100. He dosent have great hands.. Clemson uses him a lot with screens.. thats the only big plays he has. He wears a grille constantly around campus.. been in trouble a few times and still hasnt learned his lesson. I see this first hand monthly. We need a big pure WR. He's really not that great.

what does his grill have to do with his playing ability? this team needs more playmakers especially at the WR spot.

But what can he do other than curl and catch or swing out? Thats not a number 1 or 2 WR. The best WR to come out of Clemson was Hopkins.. Now thats a WR.

I have seen him run more then just a curl or a swing route. post corners, verticals, double moves, I have seen him run plenty of routes on different levels. the swing route is to get the ball in his hand quickly so he can make plays.

Our biggest issue is time in the pocket. Matthews (which we won't be in position for), Lewan (debatable if he'll be there), or Richardson (possibly even Hurst, depending on where we pick).

Think about guys like Drew Brees. They can make even the most no-name of receivers look like Randy Moss because of his ability to sit in the pocket for 5+ seconds and find an open receiver.
