QB seeks WR for friendship, touchdowns

Mr. Scot

Historically speaking, when you think of a lot of great quarterbacks, you also think of receivers associated with them. Truth be told, some quarterbacks have gone from good/very good to great primarily because the team found them their 'partner in crime', that receiver with whom they share a chemistry so strong it borders on ESP.

Some historic examples of potent QB/WR combos past:

- Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin

- Joe Montana and Jerry Rice

- Jim Kelly and Andre Reed

- Brett Favre and Sterling Sharpe

- Dan Marino and Mark Clayton

- Jim Zorn and Steve Largent

- Kurt Warner and Isaac Bruce

- Terry Bradshaw and Lynn Swann

Some more recent pairings:

- Tom Brady and Wes Welker

- Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall

- Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward

- Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson

- Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson

- Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson

- Philip Rivers and Vincent Jackson

- Drew Brees and Marques Colston

And for a fella by the name of Jake Delhomme, there was this guy named Stevonne Smith. At the moment, those two still would be considered the most prolific passing combo in Panthers team history.

So here's the question...

Is Steve Smith also 'that guy' for Cam Newton, or is Newton still waiting for his 'partner in crime'?

Given the difference in age and the vast gulf between where they are on their career paths, can Smith really be the guy that, over the long term, makes fans cheer and defenses fear?

And if the answer to that is 'no', then who might that guy be? Where do we find him?

Cam needs a partner in crime.

Smitty is past his prime and would really be effective I believe in the slot and moving everywhere in motion to attack the defense.

But as the #2 or 3 receiver. I want Smitty to fill that roll another 3 years, but I'm greedy.

Cam deserves a Henry Ellard as Jim Everett did in his prime in the Ernie Zampese days (Another combo).

Will the Panthers finally find "that guy" is the question?

I think cam is gonna have to wait to get his guy. Steve is a great football player. Even now but he's nothing like he used to be speed and agility wise. He still has the fire but just isn't that smitty that played with jake.

I do believe we either sign or draft cams guy this upcoming season. And it will all be downhill from there. Or as Alan says from the hangover it's all uphill from here, bc u wanna be on top lol

Excellent OP Mr Scott. I was even more impressed that you had Jim Kelly and Andre Reed. I was disappointed that you left off Dante Culpepper and Randy Moss though.

We all know that Cam needs a WR to grow with. The question is if we'll ever draft him one with a high pick.

I'd rather draft OL in the first 3 rounds.

I'd rather have an All Pro LT, All Pro C, & very good LG, RG, RT with a core of average to above average WRs...

As opposed to Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, & 5 Byron Bells.

It's the same concept that you see on defense. Our 03 d-line made rookie CB Ricky Manning Jr look like Rod Woodson. This year's d-line is making Mike Mitchell & a bunch of undrafted rookies look like Pro Bowlers.

It's the same concept on offense. If you have a big, dominant online that can give Cam all day to throw, Ginn & LaFell would rack up 1000+ yd & 8-12 TD each in their sleep.

Not to mention our run game would also benefit and our franchise player would be safely protected instead of flirting with injury every week.

All Pro WRs look cool on highlights & win Fantasy Football Leagues....

All Pro Linemen win Super Bowls.
