Gil Brandt: Hakeem Nicks to Panthers Make Sense

i guess people who keep suggesting wait til offseason to sign FA's/draft have pretty much written off this year, which is probably the right thing to do, BUT obtaining someone of Nicks capability would be showing the fanbase the Panthers want to win now.

Not that this trade is probable, but you give up someone in Stewart who could be cut next year anyway, for a guy that will be a major upgrade at a position that can use an upgrade, for a run this year.  A one year rental is not ideal, but if it happens it happens because of the demand of a high contract.  Chances are Stewart gets cut next year anyway, so it would be FAR from a lose-lose situation.

But again, lets just sit on our hands and let this year ride itself out, I mean we've done it so many other times, what's one more year?

So we should make a move just to appease the fan base by blowing up our cap space just to sign the flavor of the month?

Average market for top FA WR's this year was $43-67 million. He will have multiple teams looking at him. By next year we will need: LT, RT, RG, and all of our WR's except for Steve Smith are FA. Blowing that much money on one WR is not something I see Gettleman doing.

Use some of that money in FA to address our OL needs, and draft a WR early.

This

Draft OL and WR early, grabs OL FAs.  Load up efficiently and effectively.

yes simpleton, that is it.  i mean we only cleared out how much cap space for this season?

maybe it is more fun or enjoyable for some to bitch about not having enough weapons for our QB

2012 13 Games Played, 692 yards, 3 TD's

2013 6 Games Played, 442 yards, 0 TD's

OMG SUCH A BEAST

This is an example of someone manipulating stats to try and reinforce an opinion. Interesting you left off his first three seasons in the NFL in your post. Those seasons you left off included two 1,000+ yards and three consecutive seasons of 6 touchdowns or more. All while being the second or third option.

2012 was a down year for him, but he still 700 yards and averaged 13 a pop. 2013 he was injured and should be omitted from the conversation b/c it brings nothing to relevant to the discussion except that he was injured.

With that being said, I would not give him a Mike Wallace type contract but he would instantly become a legitimate threat here if healthy. Even in his down year of 2013, he still had better numbers than LaFell.

I never said we should sign Hakeem or trade for him, I'm just pointing out that he is a good wide receiver.

We'd be stupid not to sniff around NY for Nicks. Who really knows what they want for him. He'd help here immediately and WOULD GIVE CAM A LEGIT WEAPON. The last part of my statement people love to whine, cry, and bitch about whenever Cam has one of his games like he did in Arizona.

So, in short, we should ignore the most recent seasons and pay attention to seasons further in the past.

Should I file this next to your "UNC's going to compete for the ACC title" and "FSU's QB is a nobody" pontifications from earlier?

Honestly, if Nicks agreed to #2 money "You gotta pay to get paid" contract, I am 100% for it.

I am not for tying up any meaningful money for him.

Two good but not great seasons that were two years ago? Not really.

Even at his absolute best he wasn't even top 10. And this is a guy who can never stay healthy.

This is your opinion. You're probably one of the Panthers fans who would hate for a player like Nicks to come here and help. It all comes back to some Panthers fans wanting Cam to fail.

Also, don't put words in my mouth. Where did I say Nicks is a top 10 WR? He would be a great compliment to our team and would still probably be the third option behind Smitty and Olsen.

I'm assuming you are intelligent enough to understand just why we were clearing cap space. We pushed a good bit back into later years as well. We are not out of the woods yet by a long shot. So your solution is to blow it on one injury prone wide receiver? No thanks.

The best teams in the NFL are not the ones who just go out to "win" free agency. We have to build around our QB through the draft.

Big talk from the same dude who picked the "Rams to win the NFC West" this year, eh?

Think I forgot about that?

And why are you bringing ACC football into a discussion about which current NFL player could currently help our team out?

Is that his fault or that the Giants have been a hot mess this year? Eli is on pace to throw 40 interceptions btw.

He has 27 career TDs and is 25 years old.

Just for comparison our current number two receiver has 11 career TDs and is 26 years old.

Eli is on pace to throw more tds than last season and as many as the year before that. Above his career average so there is no lack of ruem to be had.
