Gil Brandt: Hakeem Nicks to Panthers Make Sense

Can anybody tell me why people love Nicks other than the fact UNC fans don't really understand football?

Pretty sure I like football more than basketball. So I would know more than a casual fan. Also, because Nicks is young and has potential, to be honest. Does he get hurt a lot? Yep. Is he worth a max deal? Nope. But is he better than any receiver on our roster? It is extremely arguable at this point.

Going to have to disagree with you there. He may have gone to UNC, but I wear Panthers blue glasses. The guy would instantly be one of the top 3 receivers ever to put on a Panthers uniform. He may have an injury bug, but he is a baller when healthy.

I'm a Tar Heels fan, but I'm a Panthers fan first. Hicks has all the tools that you'd look for in a WR. He'd help here tremendously. It would be worth taking a flyer on him the rest of the year before offering him a big contract which he is likely to receive. Charlotte is his home, and I have a close friend who knows Hakeem and he told me that Nicks is a Momma's boy. This isn't meant to be an insult towards him, I just think Carolina may be able to get him cheaper than most teams.

Going back to Tar Heel thing: I'm about as big as a UNC fan as there is on here, but Nicks is not one of those exUNC FB players a lot of die-hards and alumni speak very highly of. He's one of the guys that had a part in the FB fiasco, With that being said, Nicks is no where near the level of disowning that Marvin Austin, Greg Little and Rams DE Robert Quinn have been subject to. So anytime dook and state losers accuse a UNC fan of hyping this dude up...you need to know all the facts.

Greg "4 Games without a Sack" Hardy? I sure as heck hope we're not moving money around specifically for him until he shows a little more consistency.

I do see us saving money for Cam and Luke extensions, sure.

Hardy is ranked 9th in DEs I believe, and that goes by pressure and all that stuff.  CJ is 7th.  I like to see sacks too but Hardy is still beasting out there.

I'd still like Nicks because we have had bad luck with drafting WRs and developing them.  Cam needs weapons NOW.

He would help here tremendously. However, I would not overpay for him (which someone will) and he does appear to be injury prone. I'd rather give up a draft pick than Stewart for him.

Average market for top FA WR's this year was $43-67 million. He will have multiple teams looking at him. By next year we will need: LT, RT, RG, and all of our WR's except for Steve Smith are FA. Blowing that much money on one WR is not something I see Gettleman doing.

Use some of that money in FA to address our OL needs, and draft a WR early.

Do ballers score TD's? Cause I haven't seen him pull that off this year.

Is that his fault or that the Giants have been a hot mess this year? Eli is on pace to throw 40 interceptions btw.

He has 27 career TDs and is 25 years old.

Just for comparison our current number two receiver has 11 career TDs and is 26 years old.

OL and Secondary big time needs on this team. No argument from me on that. Still, in the history of the Panthers, we've had a true #2 one time. Moose. People always complain about the team not putting more weapons around Cam, and here is a perfect opportunity to do so.

I don't consider Nicks as good as Cruz and the Dolphins ridiculously overpaid for Mike Wallace who IMHO isn't as complete of a WR as NIcks.

Is it a coincidence you left off his 2010 and 2011 numbers?

He is a legit #1 WR in the NFL.  Something the Panthers are lacking.

i guess people who keep suggesting wait til offseason to sign FA's/draft have pretty much written off this year, which is probably the right thing to do, BUT obtaining someone of Nicks capability would be showing the fanbase the Panthers want to win now.

Not that this trade is probable, but you give up someone in Stewart who could be cut next year anyway, for a guy that will be a major upgrade at a position that can use an upgrade, for a run this year.  A one year rental is not ideal, but if it happens it happens because of the demand of a high contract.  Chances are Stewart gets cut next year anyway, so it would be FAR from a lose-lose situation.

But again, lets just sit on our hands and let this year ride itself out, I mean we've done it so many other times, what's one more year?

He also costs next to nothing against the cap.

You haven't seen a lot of players on the Giants "pull that off this year."

Quick fact check homie: GMen fourth lowest scoring team in the league PG.

i have no idea what this guy's agenda is, other than he may be a stater.... lord knows Carolina anything must really really suck
