Our 27th ranked pass offense comes down to not enough playmakers

You can say what you want, but it's almost criminal to have the 27th ranked passing offense at this juncture of the season, and Cam's career.  Of course some of it can be attributed to less than creative play calling and mistakes, but I believe that the main culprit is a lack of game-changing playmakers at the wide-out positions. The losses that we've had are in many ways a direct reflection of the true talent, or lack thereof, of our pass catchers. A completion here or there may have changed the complexion of at least a couple of the games that we lost. With Smitty obviously on the other side of the hill of a fine career, we need to be more than lucky in FA and the draft. We need to make a focused effort to bring two for-real players at the WR position before next camp.

 

Note, I didn't say the TE position, though it would be nice to acquire a guy (Jake Ballard) who can help keep defenses honest and take pressure off Cam (and Olsen and Smitty). Speaking of TEs, can anyone with knowledge speak to the development of Brandon Williams? He should be showcasing a more complete skill set at the position by now.

 

poo, man. It's just so damned frustrating to see the same m.o. season after season, even though this year has brought in a new GM.  Not one of us would bet our house on a blockbuster trade by the deadline, so we are gonna have to roll with what we have. But, let me say it again: Damn luck in FA and the draft, we need to make a focused effort to acquire a couple of legitimate receiving threats on every down before next camp (and hopefully OTAs) begin.

I think we need more threads naming one weakness for our losses.

 

Also if anyone has actually watched Smith & Lafell and Ginn this year you will know that we have plenty of talent at WR. Upgrading at OL will make them all look better.

Would love to have a duo like the Falcons HAD - with Jones and White. We would be scary! At this point though we have to deal with what we have. The trade deadline is looming and not sure Gettleman wants to spend anything at this point. He appears to be trying to save money and collect draft picks.

We've shown we're capable of pulling out W's with the team we have currently, but I think Gettleman is assessing this team. And he has a lot of decisions to make with a ton of players needing to be decided on to stay or go. Definitely think he will make the end of the season decisions on those guys an then see where our holes are and use our draft picks accordingly.

I certainly hope he hits some success in OL and WR.

Somewhat. Gonna have to go home and sit down with a few Bud Selects (my wife buys for calories' sake).  Unlike with our WR crew, I have no illusions when I pop the cap. To me it kinda tastes like water, but after a few it's acceptable. We have the Bud Select of wide receiving corps(es).

We're 3rd in yards given up.

 

2nd in TD's given up (only stat that really matters)

 

We're 18th in sacks- which sucks for us.

 

We're tied for 7th in INT's.

 

So, what exactly is your complaint? Please tell me it isn't completion percentage, that would be stupid.

On a passing YPG basis Cam is ahead of Luck, Wilson and Alex Smith.

other factors:

 

we are a run first team, overall offense including running is more important than just passing

 

our games have been close, no need to spam the passing attack

 

some teams throw a bunch more because they are down all the time

 

we have an oline that always takes 6 or 7 weeks before they find continuity and consistency

 

our defense has given us short fields quite a few times

 

can we finally stop whining about lack of weapons?  its been done thousands of times already and doesnt hold all that much weight.
