NFC South: Devoid of Clutchness

Recommended Posts

After Saints blew one late, the NFC South now has a combined record of 1-8 in non-division games decided by 7 points or less (the Saints won 2 against the Bucs and Falcons). The one win was the Falcons vs the Rams 31-24 where the Falcons blew the Rams out early, and they managed to get back in late. The losses:

Panthers vs Seahawks 12-7 (DWill fumble on go ahead drive in the 4th)

Panthers vs Bills 24-23 (Gave up game winning drive in last minute of the game)

Bucs vs Jets 18-17 (Gave up game winning drive in last minute of the game)

Bucs vs Cardinals 13-10 (Gave up 13 points in the 4th quarter)

Falcons vs Fins 27-23 (Gave up game winning drive in last minute of the game)

Falcons vs Patriots 30-23 (Falcons made a feeble come back late)

Falcons vs Jets 30-28 (Gave up game winning drive in last minute of the game)

Saints vs Patriots 30-27 (Gave up game winning drive in the last minute of the game)

Notice a trend? The good news is even though we suck in close games, so does the rest of our division, and we've still got 6 games against them. Just something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

Still, Brady love or not, the Saints defender shouldn't have let that receiver get behind him like that. I had a flashback to the Atlanta game and Nakamura's brain fart. Wasn't it weird to be pulling for the Pats, though? I found myself wanting New England to win, but hoping Brady would get a few teeth knocked out in the process.

the saints should have put the nail in the coffin going into the last last 2 minutes. all they had to do was get a first down to seal the deal...yet they went full retard on offense and did zilch.

I knew they wold lose when they went 3 and out.

The game of Football is something, when the improbable becomes probable! I do believe the refs play a part, however it is up to players to make the plays. Ex (BS Pass Interfernce call in the Buffalo Game) -> Refs wanted buffalo to have a chance, it just so happens that we lost our entire secondary right before that. Lets give the fans what they want, a close game that could come down to the last second/play! Nice formula for the NFL and ratings!

I have a hard time convincing my fellow Panthers of this, bit by and large clutchness is a myth

For people to buy into this they would have to admit Romo is a really good QB since that is the only argument against him. Most will never admit such a thing

Was he clutch in 2004 when we were 0-5 in games decided by less than 7 points?

Most (not all) clutchness is just variance.

Placebo effect. Something doesn't need to be real to have an impact.

When Brady got the ball back with a chance to win the game, he and his team believed they could do it. Conversely, when we are in those situations our team has a "here we go again" mentality. We expect to lose.

To be fair to the Saints, there looked to be more than a little home cooking going on last night.  The league loves late Tom Brady heroics, and it looked a lot like the refs helped him along on that last drive.

Oh please the refs gave the Saints the superbowl and cheated us out of several contests with them over the years. Those candyasses deserve no sympathy. It's not surprising they lose when they finally play a good team.
