"Could Dave Gettleman's plans for the Panthers future not include Cam Newton"

I feel the same as you.

He will certainly be the starter in 14, and most likely going forward, but if he doesn't show that he is progressing as a passer the rest of this year and next, I am not as sure about 15.

I want him here long term, but I am not thrilled about a 100 million $ contract. I'm not sold yet that Cam will be good enough (Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees) to spend that cap figure on him and ignore the rest of the team (Flacco, Roethlisberger, Manning 2).

See this is a practical timeframe imo all things considered.

We'll see how he progresses and fights through the tough ones this year and if he responds well and gets going with a new coach next year, I'm all in on him.  It's still an open case and it's year-3...that'll make for some debate which is evident here.

Also, it will be some massive money to invest and that's another reason right now, no matter how much fans hate it, he is going to be intensified under the microscope for critique.  Also, it's not on him but we haven't been able to build a decent team around him yet.

Let's look at his QB-class peers:

-I think the word is out on Gabbert no matter how bad the Jags are.

-Tennessee is still giving Locker a shot albiet he's injured right now, the fans have been semi-patient with him

-I think we've seem about the ceiling of what Ponder can do in the league.  The Vikes seem to be looking ahead of him.

-Dalton is a solid pro-QB.  He struggles with consistency but they've built a great team around him he can lead to wins.

-You've got Kaepernick who is struggling this season but given he didn't start year one and when put him in the role, they made it to the Super Bowl.

Cam came out guns slinging but we haven't been winning because we simply don't have a good team or coaches.

It's a tricky situation.  We've got to be patient but at the same time have those high expectations.  I just don't want to be in a Rams situation when they keep trying different things around their big investment when it's just not working out.  That is about the only franchise I see still trying to get an offense going around their hand-picked QB after 3+ years.  On the other end, you've got Alex Smith who appears to have worked out but it's obvious his future wasn't with the 49ers and Harbaugh wanted his own guy.

Only time will tell and that is why what Newton does the remainder of the year, what Gettleman builds up, and who we bring in for our next HC are the most important aspects and we just don't know quite yet.

First things first, we need a freaking offensive line.

Same old same old in every thread.

Thanks to MHS, we now know QB's can't be both "athletic" and "intelligent" apparently. Wink wink. Oh, and this notion that an offensive minded coach would not orgasm at the thought of Cam Newton at QB, but want to "move on", is nothing more than chicken little drivel.

Hey, am I seeing things, or is Phillip Rivers still in San Diego right now?

People need to open their eyes. Granted, we don't have elite receivers, but our WRs are good enough to be able to score a couple TDs each week and outside of the NY game, this has been a struggle. Cam is missing open receivers as well.

Rivers is not the best example. A new GM comes in, and lets Rivers spend one season playing to prove he is still a quality player. Had this season gone badly, I'm sure Rivers would have been gone.

Very similar to the situation here.

This is something I really think the "get an offensive coach" crowd needs to thoughtfully consider.

The top offensive coach prospects right now (Tom Clements, Greg Roman) are guys who have West Coast Offense backgrounds.  It's well known that Newton's skill set doesn't fit well in a WCO scheme.  Hence, those guys are arguably more likely to move on from Newton than a defensive coach who brings in an OC with a Coryell background.

Anybody thinking Gettleman is going to bring in someone who'll run a college style, read option type attack needs to look up his comments on that type of offense.

Agreed.

Cam would struggle in a WCO, and while I'm not advocating for that, (i prefer to watch the Coryell), I do think that with a top 5 D, the WCO is a good choice.

All I care about is finding the best possibly O coordinator to help Cam out, and for us to get him some legit weapons for next season.

I don't care the cost of the QB coach and O coordinator, we need to see what Cam can do with some real coaching.

I preached on it before the season that everyone that loved Cam should pull for RR.

Not every coach wants a dynamic QB who you need to work around. NFL is full of stubborn and arrogant guys.... who think there method works and is more important than one player.

I would hope we don't move away from Newton.....but with a coaching change odds become absurdly high IMO he doesn't get that contract extension.

Nothing about DG shows he will hire a Cam friendly HC and that will doom Cam.

I dont see jr being on board with a hc that wont want cam as his qb

I hold no allegiances to any one player...only the team. If the team decides to move on from Cam, I won't cry over it. However, I think it would be a wasted opportunity given that Cam hasn't had the supporting cast he needs and that all the other young QBs have. Moving on from Cam would be like washing our hands with muddy water.

If or when Cam gets a new OL and more weapons around him and then continues to struggle...then yes, it's probably time for a change. Realistically, that might happen by default a couple years down the road when all the bridges are burned and this team continues its mediocrity.

This is not entirely true.  It depends on what scheme the OC would want to run.  I don't see Cam having massive success in a WCO or a Earnhardt/Perkins O, however if we had a great OC with a Coryell background he could crush with Cam.

As to the PR thing....it was widely speculated that if he didn't return to form that he would be shipped out after this season.

New coach, new GM....he got 1 year to prove himself.  I suspect the exact same thing will be asked of Cam during the 14 season when DG is allowed to hire "his" staff.

It's a situational scenario.  Rivers came into a well built team with Shottenheimer; they experienced success and the playoffs.

However, I totally agree with you in the aspect that I don't see why an offensive mind wouldn't want to see what he's got in Cam rather than "moving on" or whatnot.  This team can be a juggernaut with Cam it's just a matter of getting the right pieces in place which this franchise is evidently terrible at.

It's like any team.  I mean, the Rams are giving Bradford 4+ f'n years but haven't done the best job with their offense.

Why? Never won a Superbowl, 3-4 career playoff record. Rivers is on what number is it now, head coach #3? He's already 31.

Someone tell me the last time a new head coach came in and immediately "moved on" from a 25 year old record setting QB like Cam.

Here is an idea. Keep Cam but tank the season for the number two overall pick and trade that pick for a slew of picks. Its a win/win for both sides. Those that want to trade Cam in exchange for draft picks win because they still get the draft picks they want and those that want to keep Cam win because well, because we will be keeping Cam. Lets face it, after our loss to the Vikes tommorrow where AP has a career day, we will be three games back for a wild card and 5 games back from the division. Just go 1-15 and go for a good draft day.

Never? Because those circumstances are incredibly rare. However, just because something that hasn't happened in a while (I'm sure it has happened before) doesn't mean it won't ever happen (again).
