"Could Dave Gettleman's plans for the Panthers future not include Cam Newton"

Those guys are still within the 3 year window. Within 3 years as new HCs find their guy.....unless they inherited a guy with rings

It's a legitimate possibility.

Gettleman wouldn't be the first GM to give an existing coach one year to sink or swim. Heck, Phil Emery canned Lovie Smith after a winning season.

A new coach is very likely next year, and it's not exactly unheard of for new coaches to want new quarterbacks.

Still, even with a coaching change, I see Cam Newton as the quarterback of the Panthers in 2014.

Beyond that, I admit I'm not as certain.

i just cannot see how somebody would give up on Cam this quickly when he has played with a poo O-line for 2 years and we have 0 offensive drafted players playing with Cam right now.

i hope we don't give up on a Cam because it's going to be a long fuging process again.

If you know NFL QBs on winning teams and compare similarities between them, you should identify the areas where Cam has deficiencies. Think with your head and not your heart. Gettlemen wears 2 rings and wants only a ring to feel successful. Good. What have the Super Bowl winning teams had in common:

Ben Rothleisberger

Eli Manning

Peyton Manning

Tom Brady

Joe Flacco

Most of these were multiple winners of Super Bowls. Note that there are not many running QBs on this list. Where are these runnning QBs? Michael Vick has 0 rings. Randall Cunningham has 0 rings. Fran Tarkenton has 0 rings. Jake Locker, RGIII, Colin Kaepernick, Vince Young--they get figured out. In the NFL nothing at the QB position beats intelligence and accuracy.

What you don't understand is Cam is not a running QB. He is a QB that can Run.

I preached on it before the season that everyone that loved Cam should pull for RR.

Not every coach wants a dynamic QB who you need to work around. NFL is full of stubborn and arrogant guys.... who think there method works and is more important than one player.

I would hope we don't move away from Newton.....but with a coaching change odds become absurdly high IMO he doesn't get that contract extension.

Nothing about DG shows he will hire a Cam friendly HC and that will doom Cam.

i can't argue with this anymore after this oline debacle. it's just a huge mistake and will "doom" this franchise for years.

If that does happen i will root for the guy like hell unless he plays the panthers. lets all just hope this doesn't happen.

Something people will have to admit is that there was an weird level of content-ness going into the season about our OL and WR.  I didn't know if it was mild optimism or whatever.

Dave carved out a lot of space but looking at the actual players he brought in, color me not impressed.

Hixon, Ginn, DJ Moore, Mike Mitchell, Chase Blackburn, Wharton (only bc of injuries)

2 awesome draft picks and Kugbilla, Klein, and Barner

We all knew we needed O-linemen and WRs and this is what we got.

Not necessarily.

People said the Colts were crazy to let go of Peyton Manning, and you could argue they were.

Except they replaced him with Andrew Luck.  No, Luck isn't Peyton (nobody else is) but he's not exactly a lousy replacement.

If the franchise moves on from Cam, it's only 'doomed' if his replacement sucks.

And worth noting, there are some great prospects in this year's draft, so who knows?

uh no luck in this years draft and we will have no chance at bridgewater. We'd have chances at aaron murray, boyd, mccarron and a few others (the other few fit the mold of Cam though)

i wouldn't compare us to the colts because we won't have the first pick in the draft. And then on top of that we would have to find all the things through draft and free agency that we didn't for Cam. so yes it would doom us for a couple of years imo.

10 of the 12 teams in the playoffs this year had true pocket passers. At the end of the day, the quarterback has to make plays from the pocket. I think the read option is an option . . . . - Dave Gettleman

Gettleman needs to shut his humpty-dumpty-lookin' ass up.  Russell Wilson is winning games.  Michael Vick is winning games. Colin Kaepernick is winning games and playing in Super Bowls.

Let's start with winning games, Dave, OK?  Panthers have enough talent as it is.  But evidently DG doesn't have the capacity to comprehend what a simple sports journalist like Bill Barnwell ( barnwell_bill_m.jpg) does:

Panthers fans would be well advised to wait on Newton; he's the guy holding up a middling offense, not the other way around.

I am completely capable of understanding, but thanks for the insight.  What you need to understand is what we mean when we say pocket passer.  Proactive reading of the defense, internal time clock that tells the QB when to get rid of the ball, accuracy, good footwork, etc.  Cam leaves too many WRs open while forcing passes to Smith or Olsen.  The best pocket passers master these things,

Everyone here is ridiculing Shula for not turning Cam loose more-they do not mean in the pocket.

Why the hell does everyone get upset when anyone questions the great Cam Newton's ability?  He has lost us more games than he has won us.  Heck, they are ripping Eli Manning in NY right now, and he has 2 rings.

At the rate we're going, we might have more of a chance at Bridgewater than we think :(

I like Murray and Zach Mettenberger more than I like McCarron or Boyd.

Look at it this way.  We're pretty good on defense, so regardless of who the quarterback is next year, free agency and the draft can be used with an eye toward improving the offensive side of the ball.

thats why i think the best and easiest route is to stick with Cam and add pieces that bring out his positives instead of wasting a FIRST ROUND pick on a new qb.

Get him a line and some big-bodied weapons and see what happens.
