"Could Dave Gettleman's plans for the Panthers future not include Cam Newton"

I think Panther fans like Cam because what he has shown his rookie season but the bottm line is, hes just not that good anymore(1), why? Who knows, why did Josh Freeman go from having a MVP like season(2) one year, to looking like utter poo the next two years. The thing thats worrisome is Cam still had the same OC his sophmore year as he did his rookie year and still regressed(3) and now in his 3rd year he still looks pretty bad(4). Sure he has had his moments like the first half of the Cardinals game, but he can never keep up that level of elite play throughout the course of the season on a consistent basis.

Look at the Rams. They passed up on RGIII jist because they "already had their QB" they surronded Bradford with a lot of help and he still cant seem to put it all together. What if the same happens to us? We keep Cam just for the sake of keeping him, surrond him with help but he still never progressses(5)? Another thing is yes Cam is very durable and doesnt get hurt easily, but a few years down the road when age catches up to him and hes just not as quick anymore, can he turn into a consistent, legitimate pocket passer? So far, that remains to be seen.

FIVE!  Five moronic claims in that post!  Ah ah ah!

And how many of those teams have better weapons than carolina has on the outside? Id say damn near all of them we are a team built to run the ball thats what happens when you have 90 million invested in your rbs and not your te or wrs the sooner this team understands this the better we'll be

If hes asking cam to win from the pocket then they are just setting him up to fail cam will never be a brady or manning type qb he just does t fit that mold hes a big play qb that can run you want to.see him succeed from the.pocket? Get him more weapons obviosuly he can throw the ball hes got almost 9k yards in 2 1/4 seasons

If you watch Cam Newton play QB you know this is a no. Cams only two problems is pocket awareness and using his eyes to move defenders. Give the man a real oline and a good WR and watch him go. He is making more out of nothing than most are making with much more. There are truly stupid writers and people on this board that expect Drew Brees numbers out of him with a 1/4 of the talent Brees has around him.

And perhaps just as importantly less than 1/4 of the experience.

Yep.  I think he's making the most out of the complete crap minus Olsen and D-Will that we have around him.  He has things he needs to drastically improve upon, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel with Cam for the time being.

He is on a team with absolutely ZERO identity.  How's he even suppose to know what type of QB he needs to be?  We've made pretty big changes to the offense every season Cam has been in the league.

I don't think Gettleman is mandating he be a "pocket" QB but he's probably like: "this is the guy's 3rd year, I want to see how good of a QB he can be....here's Tedd Ginn and Travelle Wharton...show me what he's got Ed Shula or whatever your name is"

Whether DG wants Newton or not is not the real question.  The better question is whether he can find someone who is better or has more upside than Newton.  Franchise quarterbacks are not a dime a dozen and can't be found anywhere in the draft contrary to some folks opinion. Plus when you find your potential starter you still have to develop them which can take years. So it isn't easy to do even if you wanted to.

Secondly you have to decide if the problems that Cam has are fixable or not.  Assuming you want a pocket passer, can Cam become one or not. Are his problems so entrenched like a The Golden Calf of Bristol that they can't be fixed or is the fact that he really hasn't been a pocket passer until the last year or two mean that he has plenty of upside if given time and the right tutor.

Sure for now he can run around and use his legs but like most quarterbacks as they age and gain experience even the running guys had to stay in the pocket more often. McNabb is a perfect example.  So Newton will be a pocket passer eventually, it is what to do now and how long will it take for him to make the transition.

He has already stated he's fine with the read option and designed runs so long as it isn't a very heavily used tactic. And he's not wrong, if Newton is to be a our long term Qb it will be because he developers into a high level throwing/ pocket skills.

Could the future be without Cam? Sure, but it won't be without Newton getting a fair shot these next two years, which is how it should be.

If you know NFL QBs on winning teams and compare similarities between them, you should identify the areas where Cam has deficiencies.  Think with your head and not your heart.  Gettlemen wears 2 rings and wants only a ring to feel successful.  Good.  What have the Super Bowl winning teams had in common:

Ben Rothleisberger

Eli Manning

Peyton Manning

Tom Brady

Joe Flacco

Most of these were multiple winners of Super Bowls.  Note that there are not many running QBs on this list.  Where are these runnning QBs?  Michael Vick has 0 rings.  Randall Cunningham has 0 rings.  Fran Tarkenton has 0 rings.  Jake Locker, RGIII, Colin Kaepernick, Vince Young--they get figured out.  In the NFL nothing at the QB position beats intelligence and accuracy.

Instant success with QBs through the history of the league is actually rare.

Wilson is on a team that as ready to win...many pieces around him. Luck similar as the Colts did a great job of rebuilding.

Players like Brady, Rodgers, sat and learned. Manning had a very tough start as did Aikman; but, Manning is an exception.

I expect Newton to struggle. I expect him to have him to have a difficult time for two reasons, one the offensive talent around him is abysmal. I know many people like to say the Panthers are a 'talented' team. I respectfully disagree, on offense, they just aren't. The Panthers do not have a talented coaching staff. Newton, too, has a different skill set but that does not mean he can't be successful.

The biggest thing that has bothered me about Newton, is when he has to make a play to when a game, when the play is there, he does not make it.

Each game, I keep hoping for him to have that opportunity because I believe once he does it, once he gets over that hump with a come from behind win, with 0:00 on the clock, I think it will set a new pattern for him.

The "7 second pause" that I think you're referring to seemed like exaggeration for effect by the writer that originated the claim (I can't remember if it was Pat Y or Person or who it was, I just seem to recall it wasn't someone I had any respect for as a writer or journalist).  I don't think whoever came up with that number had a stopwatch and timed the pause, I think he was exaggerating a minor pause that Gettleman made to formulate how he wanted to respond to a question with the intent of adding a non-existent dramatic effect to the actually very normal practice of pausing before answering a question to gather your thoughts.  We all know that NO ONE ever makes something out of nothing for the purpose of sensationalizing a story in the sports journalist world, right?

I don't think Gettleman plans to replace Cam any time in the near future.  If Cam suddenly regresses and just can't seem to get it back together, do I think Gettleman will hesitate to replace him?  Absolutely not.  But I think he's been around football enough to recognize the problem with our offense is lack of playmakers at WR and lack of competency in the big guys.

Whether whoever it was had a stopwatch or not, I'm sure they could count to 7, but in any case, I hope that DG isn't planning on trading Cam either. But everyone that reads that article or just DG's statement would draw their own opinion. I for one don't have any idea what DG plans to do. You don't believe it, you doubt that it will happen and I hope it don't.

you've definitively posted several times that cam newton isn't getting a second contract

No I have not. I don't have a clue his Gettlemen and JR really view Cam it how much they would offer on a second contract. I don't know if they truly view him as an elite QB.

If he does not show continued improvement and get wins, I don't know what they will do.

Look at our OL.....

Doesn't it look like the man values this "franchise" QB? Nope.

He will hire a NY HC and they both will want X at the position. They will then go get it.

NFL history is clear. RR leaving is bad news for Cam long term
