Do we have the worst coaching staff in the league?

No clue. I just know what we have here. Players can make the coach look better than he is as well.

 

I getchya but looking at our roster, I think it's obvious we shouldn't have gone for a coach like Rivera.  

 

We need a tactician who can relate to the players and put some fire in them.  That may sound like intangible bs but they're out there.

Honestly not sure if we have the worst staff in the league. During games it definitely feels like it sometimes. In the second half of the Arizona game it sure felt like it. Sometimes I remind myself that the coaches are professionals, and they must know something I don't. Other times, I'm not so sure.

 

I wouldn't really care where our coaching staff ranked if we won games. But I suppose if we did win games, we wouldn't have a coaching staff that you'd rank at the bottom of the league. Basically a chicken-and-the-egg kind of deal.

 

I have very little faith in the coaching staff to turn the team around. They've been dealing with the same problems for most of Rivera's stint here. I don't think they can or will suddenly change what's been happening since Rivera became coach here.

 

And fwiw, my opinion that coaching has minimal effect in the NFL has dramatically changed. The Chiefs were awful last year. They got a new quarterback and brought in Andy Reid. Alex Smith is a decent quarterback, but not a cornerstone player who can win you a bunch of games each year just with talent. Andy Reid to me makes all the difference for them.

 

I'm not sure that this is totally accurate example, but I also think that coaching did a lot for the Colts in 2012. Yes, they got Andrew Luck and he's done well for them. But I think coaching played in a big part in their absurdly quick turnaround from worst team in the league to playoff team.

 

The 49ers are a good example too, and the team that I think mirrors ours closest. Singletary didn't make the most of the talent they had. Harbaugh has. I'm not saying we have the talent level that SF has, because I don't think we do. But I think parallels exist between us and 9ers anyway.

 

I think a point you hit on here is that coaching holds more weight than any one player.  A guy like Manning will really push the envelope and can make a case but that's about it right now in the NFL.  

 

Good coaching does wonders and we went out and got a DC minded guy denied by 9 teams to help out our rookie QB and Hurney assembled squad.  Chud was an interesting direction but we have no true head coach.  We have a DC at HC.  The funny thing is when you think about it, his style is kinda directionless...relates well to this team.

They have no identity. They have second guessed themselves so much they are now just wandering around lost in the wilderness without a compass.

Agreed on Manning. You could probably count the number of players that really impact a team the way a coach does on one, maybe two hands.

 

And I think your point about Rivera and the resulting direction of the team is spot on. Rivera could be really good at strategizing matchups like coordinators need to be, but I don't think he has the organization and leadership skills to be a head coach. That could certainly explain why our team is so fugging inconsistent.

Totally, I think a lack of identity has been a huuuge deal.  Our staff inculcates absolutely zero direction.  It grinds my gears.

The consistency of how bad Rivera is is astonishing. Hes like the Bill Bellicheck of bad HCs, hes just such a genius at being awful I almost respect it. 0-3 after the bye, three consecutive 1-3 starts, 10 losses in games we had the lead in the 4th qtr, 2-14 in games decided by 7 pts or less, 0-3 on opening day. Rivera is so bad he almost deserves to be in the coaching hall of fame, its actually hard to be so efficient at being bad like he is.

I would say avg but avg does not win championships. We do have the worst Oline in the leauge and our WRs are close behind.

I don't really see many coaches right now though in that situation.  Maybe Schwartz in Detroit.
