If "best defense" is the team that gives up the fewest yards, even though we have played one less game than most teams. Sure, we are the best.

The top 4 teams on that list have a combined 3-15 record.

 

sort it by PPG and it looks alot different

 

the top 7 teams all have a winning record except for us

You are reading it wrong. Click on yards per game, not total yard allowed. Panthers have played 1 fewer game than most teams.

They are #3 in total defense.

Plenty good.

They have a real shot to finish the season #1 though.

Not with our offense keeping them on the field 80% of the time.

We do have a good defense at the point but the offense is the problem.  The good news is that if we can get that side of the ball fixed the defense could be good for years to come.  If you look over the years good defensive teams tend to win more than they lose. This is a better problem to have than sucking on both sides of the ball.
