Panthers sign WR Marvin McNutt

Mr. Scot

College tape looks good, measurables look good...you guys do realize talented players do get buried in limbo sometimes right?  He's only in his 2nd year and hasn't received much playing time.  Brandon Williams hasn't done anything in 4 games this year (hasn't even been activated in 2 of the games), does he suck?  Should we drop him?  Robert Lester wasn't even a part of our active roster until he was forced into the starting lineup due to injuries, and look at what a bright spot he's been so far.  Oh and that Ted Ginn guy who has been playing well for us this year...how did he do last year?  2 catches for 1 yard...and he couldn't even muster up much of any playing time on a 49ers team with a poor receiving corps.  Josh Thomas was taken off another team's practice squad and he has at least been a serviceable starting CB for us.  And hey, that's just on our team.

I don't understand the doom and gloom over a signing like this...at worst, a sense of indifference would be appropriate.  This is an unproven 2nd year player so who knows how he'll perform?  Yeah he probably won't be a superstar, but we don't need him to be...he's just depth right now.  A trade seems unlikely at this point, so it doesn't look like we're going to address our hole at WR until the offseason.  And it's not like the McNutt signing completely shattered any chance we have of trading for Gordon or Nicks.  If they decide they want to trade for one of them, then McNutt or someone else can be dropped...easy as that.  Plus we still have another pending roster spot once Amini officially goes on IR.

He probably knows hw to use his size and strength better than LaFell tbh

Or maybe they just want someone who isn't familiar with the playbook, has done nothing in the NFL and who doesn't try to run his routes if he knows the ball isn't coming his way.  How much time was wasted discussing and signing this 5th WR?

  From NFL.com::

STRENGTHS  McNutt is reliable to get his hands on the ball and make a tough catch when it's thrown anywhere near him. He has good awareness to get open on broken plays and drag his feet along the sidelines. He is a viable possession-type option for quarterbacks looking to pick up a quick first down.

WEAKNESSES

 McNutt can struggle when running routes across the middle. There are consistency and effort issues when blocking and running decoy routes that aren't intended to him, and he can struggle off the line if he isn't decisive and powerful with his first step
